A long queue of devotees stands in a roped line on a paved path in front of a decorated open stage canopy with red and gold trim. A large banner above the canopy reads Tamil text meaning Karthikai Deepam festival, and beside it a portrait shows a smiling man with an orange turban and beard. Men in white dhotis and shirts, women in saris and salwars, and a young boy in a striped shirt wait in line, some carrying bags. Trees and a hill rise in the background, a white screen hangs on the left, and metal stanchions and chains guide the crowd.
