Photograph inside a temple sanctum at night during a Shiva abhishekam. A man in a large dark turban and rust-brown dhoti with a gold border stands at a black stone lingam on a dark pedestal, holding a silver plate or tray and pouring from it. Behind him, a bare-chested attendant in orange cloth with a garland holds ritual items, and a man in red-brown clothing stands near the lingam. On the right, a large deity murti in white and red garments with gold crown and armlets is draped with rainbow-coloured flower garlands. Warm lighting and a plain concrete ceiling frame the scene. Several priests and attendants are present in ritual dress.

A figure in a tall black turban-like headpiece, a long rudraksha-style mala and a brown-and-gold draped robe pours liquid or milk from a silver vessel over a dark stone linga, with white flower petals and a small offering heap at its base. Behind, a second man in a reddish-brown robe and rudraksha beads holds a white conch-shaped vessel. Garlands of yellow, orange, white and purple flowers hang on the right, beside a gilded deity murti in a white and red garment. Several people stand in the background, including a woman in orange. The figure with the turban and mala is a person candidate from the distinctive headpiece and adornments, so this is an abhishekam rite at Mahashivaratri.2016-03-07March 07 20162016-03-07
