March 12 20202020-03-12March 12 20202020-03-12Night photograph of a fire-walking ritual on an open dirt ground. A long bed of glowing embers and white ash lies across the centre of the frame. Women in white saris with gold borders line up at the left, some with palms pressed together, and one woman walks toward the embers. On the right, a bare-chested man in a white dhoti with gold borders raises a hand in greeting. A figure in an orange-red robe stands near the centre holding a pink deity murti or idol on a tray. Men in dhotis and onlookers stand in the background in front of a red-walled building under a dark sky.2020-03-12March 12 20202020-03-12March 12 20202020-03-12Photo 11680123March 12 20202020-03-12December 30 20062006-12-30A photograph of a fire-walking ritual on a dirt path lined with coconut palms under bright sky. A shallow pit of glowing-grey embers runs between raised earth edges, with a child in white barefoot mid-stride across it. A woman in a light blue-grey top and white dhoti-style skirt, long dark hair down her back, stands at the near end with arms outstretched, guiding the child. Behind a white rope barrier, a large crowd of devotees in white traditional clothing and gold-bordered mundus watches; some women wear pink and green saris and rudraksha-style necklaces. Offerings and flower petals lie along the path edges.2008-12-31December 30 20062006-12-30Night photograph of a fire-walking ritual in an outdoor temple courtyard. A long pit of glowing red embers runs across the foreground, with smoke rising from it, bordered by wooden poles and rails. Many people dressed in white stand along the rails, some in white dhotis and shirts, one in a yellow-bordered sari. In the background a lit lamp stands on a raised platform near a tall pole, with a deity murti and white-draped structure beneath, under a string of pennant flags. A man in white with a blue bucket stands near the pit edge. No single person can be confidently identified as the a person from appearance alone.2006-12-30December 31 20082008-12-31
