A night-time photo of a seated group of women and girls in white and cream clothes, several with hands pressed together in prayer, on a yellow cloth spread over a woven striped mat. Rows of polished brass oil lamps stand in front of them, with tall tiered brass lamps at the sides. Behind them a large crowd sits and stands in a dim hall lit by a string of lights. A woman in orange clothing sits at the centre of the front row, with a woman in a yellow sari at the left.

In the foreground, a row of small clay oil lamps burns on a long table, and a brass multi-tiered lamp stands on the floor at left. A white horizontal rope or barrier runs across the frame, partially blurring the scene. Two bare-chested devotees in white dhotis with forehead markings sit near the centre, folded hands raised. The atmosphere suggests a lamp-lit puja or satsang.2011-04-17Evening outdoor gathering under a large tree at night, with strings of yellow fairy lights overhead. A standing man in white dhoti and shirt with an orange saffron shawl raises one arm and holds a small bell-like object while addressing a seated crowd. Many devotees in white clothes sit on the ground in rows. To the left, seated people in white attend brass oil lamps and ritual vessels laid on a mat, with flames glowing. An orange flag hangs from the tree branch, and garlands and paper streamers decorate the trunk. Several men in white sit on white plastic chairs at the right. A youth in white with a saffron shawl appears in the foreground near the lamps.2009-02-02February 02 20092009-02-02Photograph of a large group of women seated on the floor in a covered pavilion during a vilakku pooja, lighting oil lamps. Many wear white saris and some have blue or patterned blouses, with beaded necklaces and tulsi-style beads. Each woman holds or sits beside a brass oil lamp and a plate of flowers and offerings on a mat, with flames flickering in the smoky dim light. Decorative orange and blue cloth banners hang from the pavilion roof, and a few men in white stand at the back. No clearly identifiable a person is visible in the scene.2006-12-31July 11 20062006-07-11
