A decorated palanquin with a gold canopy, garlands and tassels is carried above the crowd, with a shaven-headed man in saffron robes steadying it at the top. Men in white dhotis and shirts with red and rudraksha malas walk beside it, several holding long gold-topped ceremonial staffs topped with orange and red embroidered pennants.
