A bare-chested man in an orange dhoti works inside a covered space, holding a long curved pole with a brush or roller to the pinkish brick wall while his shadow falls across the wall. Behind him hang an orange cloth and a colourful decorative hanging with elephant motifs; a metal tray sits on a shelf. The figure has long dark hair and a mala-like necklace, with no clearly visible face, so the identity remains uncertain. The scene shows a wall being painted or refurbished during preparations at Kailasa Tiruvannamalai.

A worker stands on a rusty metal stool against a pink-washed wall, reaching up to a wooden pillar wrapped with green rope. He wears a navy short-sleeved shirt and a turquoise cloth wrap. A colourful painted pillar decoration with elephant motifs in red, green and orange hangs beside him, and stacked metal chairs and a blue plastic chair sit in the corner. The scene shows preparation work at a temple hall before the Karthikai Deepam festival.

A photograph of a ceremony outdoors in daylight. In the foreground, a bare-chested man in an orange-red cloth wrapped over his shoulder and waist, with white sandalwood marks on his upper arm, grips a tall grey pole while tying an orange rope around it. His back is turned to the camera. He wears a long garland of white jasmine, green plastic parrots and gold-toned bells, with rudraksha beads strung through it. Beside him, another man in orange robes holds the rope taut and wears rudraksha malas on his wrists. A red and yellow parasol with tassels stands behind. Onlookers in white dhotis and shirts watch, and a bald man in orange and yellow robes with a gold chain stands at right. The pole has a fringed top and the setting is a grassy open area with trees.

A photo of a man in an orange-saffron shawl with a red-and-white flower garland around his neck, tying a white rope to a large ornate copper-brass kalasha-like vessel at night. An orange satin cloth hangs from the vessel. A second person in orange stands at the right edge. Dark background. Swamiji (probable) appearance: long swept-back dark hair, saffron shawl and floral garland, working on the ceremonial pot.

A photograph of a temple colonnade with carved granite pillars and bracketed capitals along a stone wall. A man in an orange-red dhoti and shawl with a yellow border, wearing a teal head covering and white tilak markings on his arms, stretches a long bamboo pole upward to clean the ceiling beams. Behind him, a second man in a white dhoti with a yellow border stands on a stone step. The pole has a tied bundle of fibres at its tip. Stone steps and a sunlit walkway lead along the corridor.

A photograph of a group performing a stick dance in a bright, tiled hall with recessed ceiling lights. In the foreground a young boy in a bright orange kurta with gold trim and a white tilak on his forehead holds a thin coloured stick raised in one hand. Beside him on the left, a blurred boy in red shirt wears a rudraksha mala. Behind them, men in orange and saffron robes and white dhotis hold sticks, and a smiling man in white with a red-bordered shawl stands on the right. Several other participants are visible in the background.

A photograph of an outdoor ritual at a temple-like courtyard. In the foreground a man with long dreadlocks and a vertical tilak stands with palms pressed together, wearing a rust-orange dhoti and shawl, a pink and white flower garland, a gold pendant and rudraksha-style beads. A red and gold ceremonial parasol is held above a white-and-red striped pole planted in a pit lined with yellow bricks and scattered red and pink petals. A second man in rust-orange cloth crouches beside the pit, pouring from a small vessel, while a man at right in an orange shawl holds the parasol. Behind them, saffron-robed devotees and drummers with metal drums stand among a crowd. A stone seat, fruit plates and brass vessels sit on striped mats.

A photograph taken at dusk of a dwajarohana flag-hoisting ceremony, rotated sideways. A tall dark wooden flagstaff with a carved finial and a bundle of straw and green leaves near its base rises diagonally against a deep blue evening sky, with a white rope and a pale tuft of flags at the top. In the upper left, a man in an orange garment with a gold necklace and white face markings pulls on the rope, while a person in a lime-green kurta stands by the base of the pole, gripping it. Strings of marigold garlands wrap the pole, and a steel lattice roof with small orange pennants is visible behind.

A photograph taken from below of a tall copper-clad ritual flagstaff or dhvaja stambham rising under a canopy of metal roof trusses. A figure with long matted dreadlocks, a red flower garland across the head, and a reddish-brown robe stands at the base, looking up toward the top. The lower pillar is wrapped with green leaves, yellow and red flower garlands, and a bundle of straw or grass, with a carved stone base. Decorative hanging ornaments and a red wire frame appear at the edges of the shelter. The figure is a devotee or priest; the page's a person reference does not establish the identity of the figure from appearance.

Night photograph of a man in saffron-orange robes raising a flag staff topped with palm fronds and white and red cloth, tied with white cord. He has a wristwatch, a gold bangle and a red and orange garland, and is pulling the staff upward beside a polished copper vessel on the left. A dark background surrounds the scene.
