Night-time outdoor ritual at a temple-like courtyard lit by rows of brass oil lamps (deepams) set on the ground and on the steps. In the centre, a square yellow-painted fire pit (homa kund) holds ash, with no visible flames. To the left, an empty orange-cushioned throne (peetha) sits on a raised platform, with a man in white and a man in a white shirt standing near it and a woman in a white sari beside them. Behind, several people in white and orange-saffron robes sit and stand among the lamps, and string lights twinkle on the back wall. On the right, a decorated deity murti in red and yellow cloth is placed on a wheeled cart beside a flower-garlanded figure. Roughly fifteen to twenty people are visible.2015-11-25Night-time outdoor ritual at a temple courtyard lit by rows of brass oil lamps (deepa) on the ground and a string of multicolour fairy lights overhead. In the centre is a square stone fire pit with ash. Beside it stands an empty orange-cushioned throne (peetha) with a small brass lamp in front. Several dozen people in white and saffron dress are seated or standing: men in white dhotis and shirts, women in white saris, and monks in orange robes. On the right a deity murti in red and gold cloth sits on a wheeled wooden cart draped in yellow fabric. A few people in white stand in the foreground, one on the left holding a red sash. The scene suggests a Karthigai deepam lamp-lighting ceremony.2015-11-25December 30 20092009-12-30A photograph at dusk of a courtyard lined with many tall brass lamp stands (nilavilakku) with flickering oil lamps, some with rooster-topped finials, arranged on a patterned floor with kolam-style designs. Several people in white ritual clothing and a few in saffron-toned garments move among the lamps near a colourful string of lights and palm trees. Brass lamps are lit in preparation for the Karthigai deepam lamp lighting.2015-11-25Night outdoor ceremony under a tin-roofed open pavilion with bright overhead light and strings of coloured lights. A woman with a pinned-back hairstyle and a red-orange garment, decorated with a flower garland, sits with hands folded on a gold-trimmed throne at left. In the foreground, a robed figure in saffron-orange cloth holds a small lamp, and smoke rises near the centre. Rows of people in white dhotis and white shirts with red-and-gold shawls stand with palms joined beside a flat stone path decorated with green leaves and rangoli. A framed painting of a deity is set on a stand in the background, and a crowd watches from behind.2016-03-06 +1 copiesNight-time ritual in an open courtyard before a gilded arch framing deity murti of a seated couple with crowns, one holding a staff, both adorned with garlands. In front, a red-brick kalasha-style structure stands near an oil lamp-lit puja area. Many devotees in orange and maroon robes and white dhotis sit in a dense crowd, some with rudraksha malas and bare shaved heads; several raise hands in reverence. A woman in a red blouse and orange sari films with a camera at left, and a standing man in white and a fan are at right.2013-03-18Evening outdoor ritual at night on a raised platform with red and white striped edges and orange cloth draped over a central seat. A figure in orange robes sits cross-legged beside a tall ceremonial pole with a silver top, and a golden throne-like seat with red cushions stands at left. Many people in white clothes sit on the ground in rows with small oil lamps and red-cased lamps before them, while a man in white kneels at the front with a microphone. A decorated float on the right carries a deity murti framed by garlands and red cloth. Kolam patterns are drawn on the ground in front.2009-12-30February 16 20092009-02-16October 03 20142014-10-03December 22 20162016-12-22 +1 copiesMarch 18 20132013-03-18March 06 20162016-03-06 +1 copies
