Street-level photograph of a crowded Indian residential lane during a procession. A crowd of devotees lines both sides of the road in front of multi-storey buildings. A man in a white dhoti and shirt stands at centre-left facing others, and a man in a white shirt holds papers at right. Women wear sarees in orange, green, blue and pink, with children in white, red and blue clothes. A tricolour-striped awning hangs over a shop front on the left, and a red car and motorcycles sit on the road.

A blurry street photograph in an Indian town shows a crowd of men in white dhotis and shirts, some wearing orange or saffron shawls, walking through a busy road with autorickshaws, cars, motorcycles and a white van. A shirtless man in the centre wears a gold chain, a sacred thread and a yellow-gold cloth, holding something small in his hands. Auto-rickshaws are yellow and black, and colourful hoardings line the roadside behind the crowd.

A busy street in a South Indian town with a wide paved road running through the centre. Pedestrians walk across the road, including a man in a white dhoti and a woman in a green sari. Several black motorcycles are parked on the right beside a row of shops, and yellow auto-rickshaws sit on the left. A white minibus stands in the middle distance. Tall trees line the left side, and utility poles with overhead wires run along the road. A large billboard on the right shows portraits of men, though the figures are too small to judge clearly. Power lines and a low hill appear in the distance under an overcast sky.

A photograph of a street procession in a busy Indian town. Many men in white dhotis and white shirts wear orange shawls and walk barefoot on the road, with several women in saffron-orange sarees among them. Yellow auto-rickshaws, parked bicycles, motorbikes and a pedestrian crowd fill the scene, and a painted pillar stands at the right edge. No single figure is clearly identifiable as a person from appearance, so no one is labelled as him.

A crowded street scene on a rainy day, with many people packed together in the foreground and midground. Men in white shirts and dhotis, some in checked shirts and one in an orange shirt, stand close together. A man in the front wears a yellow-and-white checked shirt and a red-and-white cloth over his shoulder. Several men in white and a woman in a dark sari are visible among the crowd. Behind them, a blue truck and a yellow-canopied handcart line a wet road, with more pedestrians and motorcycles farther back. The scene looks like an ordinary roadside gathering with no visible ritual, dais or a person.

A crowd of devotees lines a wet village street during a procession, many with hands folded in prayer or arms crossed. In the foreground a woman in a white sari holds a silver tray of lit oil lamps. Nearby a man in white dhoti and shirt stands barefoot, and women wear saris in teal, green-orange and magenta. Parked motorbikes, auto-rickshaws and a white compound wall line the road, with scattered flower petals on the ground.

October 27 2004 - Surat Inter-religious conference in Tiruvannamalai

Outdoor street scene in a South Indian town, with a crowd of devotees gathered on a dirt road beside parked bicycles and motorbikes. In the centre, a man in a white shirt and white dhoti with an orange-saffron shawl stands facing a woman in a green sari who covers her face with her hands while a woman in a pink sari beside her presses her palms together. A man in a white shirt and white dhoti on the right, hands folded in anjali, looks on. Children and adults line the background with hands pressed together in prayer, and a wooden pole or staff rests in the lower left. The scene appears to be a devotional blessing or prayer moment in a public street.
