2004 - sacred collections uncategorisedDecember 11 20062006-12-11A standing man in a flowing saffron-orange robe, bare-chested under the wrap, holds a brass multi-flame aarti lamp in one hand and a small brass bell in the other, lifting the bell as he speaks. His long, swept-back dark hair falls past his shoulders. Seated devotees in white and grey clothing sit on the floor to his left, some with orange shawls, and one woman with glasses has her palms pressed together. Before him on a woven mat stand a brass kalasha-style pot, a tray of bananas and fruit, a conch shell, and a small copper cup, with a white-draped seat behind. The backdrop is a dark banyan-like root hanging wall.2005-12-19A man in saffron-orange robes stands at night beside a large banyan tree, holding up a silver oil lamp with a lit flame in his right hand. He has long dark hair swept back and wears a red undershirt beneath the orange cloth. To the right, a second man in white dhoti and white top with an orange shawl and a rudraksha mala holds a brass plate of offerings. Another partially visible figure stands at the far right edge. The ground is bare earth with a low stone rim at the bottom edge. Two men in white dhoti and shirt stand to the left: one holds a plate of offerings, the other stands with palms pressed together in namaskar. The ground is strewn with white petals, and a red carpet lies at the left edge. The scene suggests an evening aarti ceremony.Night photo of a procession on a dark dirt road with a crowd behind. A central figure in an orange saffron robe, orange turban, and a rudraksha mala walks smiling in sandals, flanked by men in white kurtas and white dhotis; one wears an identification badge on a lanyard. Several women in pastel and white saffron-accented saris and a boy in a light blue shirt follow, some wearing lanyards. Small lights glow in the background.2006-12-16A figure in a saffron-orange robe with a matching orange head wrap stands in a decorated hall, holding aloft a silver lamp with a flame in one hand and a handbell in the other. Behind him, devotees in white clothing stand with palms pressed together, including a woman in a white sari with a red border on the left and a man in white dhoti and shirt on the right. Strings of tinsel and fairy lights hang from the ceiling, and framed portrait photographs line the walls. Ceremonial lamp waving suggests an aarti, with the flame and bell held in front of the orange-clad figure. The candidate's identity is uncertain from appearance alone, so the figure is described by role as a ritual officiant.Night photograph of a procession on a dirt ground lit by a street lamp. In the centre, a long-haired figure in saffron-orange robes and a heavy gold ornamental necklace walks holding a long wooden staff. Beside them, a man in an orange dhoti and orange shawl gestures forward.
