Behind them, a priest wearing an orange shawl, a long mala and sandalwood marks on his arms sits near a microphone stand, and another man in white with a mala stands at right. Beside him, a woman in a cream sari with a dark beaded necklace holds a lit lamp toward the tray. Behind them, several women in cream, yellow and beige saris sit with hands folded in prayer, and a young child sits among them. A shaved-headed priest in white dhoti with a gold necklace and sandalwood-paste markings on his forehead and arms holds a small silver oil lamp with a lit flame. Beside him a woman in a white sari with a green-and-gold border and a black beaded necklace stands with palms pressed together in prayer. Behind them an orange-robed man with gold beads and a white-clad figure with gold beads sit among silver plates and offering trays with flowers, and several people in the foreground hold lamps. A man in white dhoti and shirt with a white forehead mark sits in the centre holding a lit oil lamp, eyes lowered. Around him, shaved-headed priests in white garments, some bare-chested with gold necklaces, hold lamps or stand behind. A woman in white with a red bindi and a dark beaded necklace sits nearby. At the lower edge, women with long braided hair in white and orange clothing are seen from behind. On the right, a gold-trimmed wooden throne draped in orange cloth with red cushions and a fruit plate stands beside a white wall unit fan. Two people in the scene are seated near the throne, and the scene appears to be an aarti or puja. No person in the frame is confidently identifiable as a person from appearance, so the throne is empty of an identifiable occupant.2010-10-22 +1 copiesOctober 08 20102010-10-08A photograph of a puja being performed beside an ornate gold-framed throne draped in red velvet. A man in white ritual dress with an orange-tinged cloth and a gold necklace lifts a small silver oil lamp (aarti) with one hand. A young shaved-headed man in white dhoti with a red border, bare-chested, wearing a gold-beaded necklace and a gold bracelet, holds a small silver oil lamp (aarti lamp) in one hand while gesturing with the other. Vibhuti (white ash) marks are on his forehead and body. Behind him a woman in an orange shawl and white garment stands, and to the right a woman in a yellow garment with folded hands and a blonde woman in a cream sari hold small lamps. Silver puja plates with offerings and a lit flame sit in the foreground, with several heads in silhouette. No one in the scene is identified as a person by appearance, so the central man is described by role as a priest performing aarti.2010-10-23A photograph of a ritual aarti in a hall with red chairs in the background.
