November 29 20112011-11-29Night ritual inside a temple hall beside a fire pit where a flame rises from a pile of coconut halves and offerings. In the foreground a shaven-headed man in an orange-saffron cloth and a garland of yellow and white flowers holds his hands over the fire near another man's head, who is also shaven and garlanded. Behind them a bald man in a white dhoti with a rudraksha mala and flower garland looks upward. Several onlookers in dark and white clothing stand around, and a bright tube light and stone pillars frame the scene.2011-11-29November 29 20112011-11-29December 09 20112011-12-09October 26 20112011-10-26Night photograph of a ritual fire in a metal tray with a flame and split coconuts with husks in the foreground. A seated man in a saffron-orange garment with a dark rudraksha mala stands or sits behind the fire, near a bright bulb-lit temple structure and a lit archway. To the left, a person in white clothes wears a garland of yellow flowers and a dark bead mala. Two men in white shirts and light shawls stand to the right, one with hands raised near his face. The scene suggests a homa or fire offering, with coconuts as offerings.2011-11-29December 09 20112011-12-09A shaved-headed priest in a white dhoti and shawl with gold borders stands in profile at night, holding a silver bell in his right hand and a silver aarti lamp with several burning flames in his left. A second figure in a white dhoti with a gold-bordered shawl stands at right, also holding a lamp. Garlands of yellow-green and red flowers hang on a decorated pillar or deity stand at left, with blurred background ornaments.2016-12-07A photograph of a night aarti ceremony. A bare-chested man in white dhoti with a gold-edged shawl and a gold bead necklace holds a brass lamp with a large open flame, smoke rising behind it. A small red tilak marks his forehead. Incense sticks stand in a bowl at his lap, a second oil lamp burns to his right, and a gold kalasha-like brass object sits at the right edge beside a seated figure in orange. The background is dark with a round brass plate behind him.2011-10-26Night photograph of an evening aarti at an outdoor temple setting with blurred colourful string lights in the background. Three men stand in a row. The man on the left in a white shirt and white dhoti holds a long brass torch with a flaming wick. The central man, shown in profile, wears a white dhoti and white shawl over one shoulder, with rudraksha malas around his neck and a saffron-yellow sash, and holds a brass fire torch with a cloth-wrapped handle. The man on the right in a white shirt, wearing rudraksha malas, holds a small brass vessel.2015-11-16
