April 2008 - Making Of Kailaasa In Tiruvannamalai

Night outdoor ceremony with a seated figure in orange robes and a rudraksha mala on a red quilted cushioned seat, while a devotee in white kneels before him and two attendants in white robes with orange shawls hold a red cloth and threads. Behind them, standing devotees in white and orange shawls hold brass trays and a small table holds a metal plate with flowers and offerings. A saffron flag hangs at the top right, and a mat lies on the ground. The scene suggests a ritual padapuja or satsang gathering; the seated figure's appearance and ornate cues are consistent with a person seated in a throne-like seat, a sannyasi in saffron with a mala.

Dark nighttime photo of a temple procession or ritual. In the foreground, a man in a white shirt raises a red-and-gold cloth-wrapped object overhead with one arm, smiling. Behind him, several men in white dhotis and white kurtas wear orange shawls. A garland of yellow and purple flowers hangs at the upper left beside a gilded shrine and a red cushioned seat. Two men at the right edge, one wearing glasses, look on. Roughly six to eight people are visible.

Beside him, a figure in a bright orange-red shawl and saffron dhoti holds the white cloth and rope. Another person in orange stands further right, and two people in the lower foreground, one in white and orange, are watching. Coconut palm fronds appear at upper right against a dark background. The scene suggests a flag being hoisted on a ritual pole.

Indoors in a dim stone cave-like room with a coloured bunting strung overhead, a group of young sannyasis in white kurtas and saffron-orange shawls work on a bamboo frame. A young man in front wears a rudraksha mala and a red bindi, and holds a bamboo pole with an ornate golden finial wrapped in red cloth and tied with twine. A man in a white shirt reaches in to guide the frame, while a woman in white with an orange shawl and glasses and another man in an orange cap look on. Bamboo sticks lie across the scene as they tie the frame together. A small purple emblem appears at the top left corner. The activity is learning the traditional tying of a kattumurthy frame.
