October 08 20162016-10-08A photograph of a display of painted clay figurines, the kind used in a Navaratri golu arrangement. In the centre a small seated figure in orange robes sits on a dark rock base, with a red tilak on the forehead, a dark bead necklace, and hands held in a gesture of blessing, with a turtle at its base. Nearby stand a green-robed figure with a purple sash and blurred orange-robed figures in the foreground, set against a dark tree, colourful painted dolls and a striped tiered structure. The figures are miniature statuettes, not people, and the appearance of the central figure is not a sufficient basis for identifying anyone.2016-10-08A photograph of a Navaratri golu display of small painted clay dolls and figurines. The central figure is a small orange-robed seated sage with a white tilak, red bindi and a rudraksha mala, sitting on a dark rocky base beside a tree with green and red-flowered foliage. Surrounding dolls and a blurred colourful background include a bird, a tiered pagoda-like structure, a green and red figure and a dark tall shrine-like form. The figures are toys or murtis, not physical people.2016-10-08A photograph of a Navaratri golu display of painted clay dolls arranged on a white cloth and a gold-and-maroon brocade runner. Other dolls include a seated musician playing a veena at left, a seated figure in blue playing a stringed instrument at right, a standing male figure in a white dhoti, and small children figures. Ornate painted figures and a peacock appear in the background. At centre stands a dark grey deity murti of a standing Vishnu-form figure with tall crown, layered garlands and jewelled ornaments, flanked by pillars. Around it, painted figures in white dhotis with saffron and green waist cloths and tilak markings play drums and a harmonium, while a bare-chested figure in orange robes stands among them. Two figures lie prostrate in the foreground, one in white and one in green, as in a devotional offering.
