Several standing female celestial figures (apsaras) with tall ornate headdresses, bare upper bodies and jewelled adornments are carved in a row in shallow relief on a dark weathered sandstone surface. Decorative pilasters and floral carved borders frame the panel. At the right edge, a partly visible woman in a pink-and-white striped top and white trousers walks past the doorway.2007-07-07July 02 20072007-07-02July 02 20072007-07-02Close view of weathered stone bas-relief carvings on an Angkor-style temple wall. Central figure is a carved apsara-like female figure with raised arms and an elaborate headdress, standing on a carved mythical animal with a flaming halo-like arch behind. Flanking figures on left and right are similar carved dancers or celestial figures, some riding animals, with ornate scrolling foliage and small carved creatures below. No living people are visible.2007-07-02July 02 20072007-07-02Photograph of weathered sandstone wall at an Angkor-period temple, mossy and lichen-covered. Carved relief shows a standing female figure in a niche wearing a tall headdress and long garment, holding an object at waist level, with a smaller companion figure beside her to the right. Recessed rectangular panels with pillar-like carvings surround the figures, and the lower courses of stone steps are green with moss. No people are present.2007-07-05July 02 20072007-07-02Close view of a stone bas-relief carving on a temple wall at Angkor Wat, Cambodia. Carved figures in high crowns and jewellery ride on rearing mythical horses and lions beneath ornate flame-like arches and scrolling foliage. Stylised floral rosettes line the lower border.
