A woman seated on the floor in a white blouse and yellow shawl with a green-bordered sari holds a small silver bowl of yellow powder in both hands. She has a red bindi and vertical white marks on her forehead, gold bangles, and wears glasses. Behind her a woman in white is partly visible. A large hall filled with seated devotees holding small oil lamps aloft during an evening lamp ritual. In the foreground a woman in an orange-saffron sari sits cross-legged, lifting a lit lamp, with brass plates, a blue lid and pink-filled bowls on the floor beside her. Nearby women in white and cream saris with red or yellow shawls also hold flames, and a young woman in a grey shawl looks ahead. Rows of attendees recede into a hazy background, many with white clothing and lamps glowing across the room. No central figure is identifiable as a person in view, so this is a group ritual with devotees in white and saffron.

A photograph of a group ritual on a floor covered with white cloth. A man with long swept-back white hair, white clothing and a white-and-gold pendant with beads sits at the centre, his hand raised over a brass tray set with a garland of white flowers and red kumkum. Around him, several people in white dress kneel and offer kumkum and flowers from the tray. Behind them, many brass bowls of grains, sweets and fruit are arranged in rows, with potted palms at the left and devotees in white seated in the background. Appearance-based cues are consistent with a person for the central white-haired figure, who holds the ritual centre as a presiding figure.
