A photograph of a fire-damaged encampment at a Kumbh Mela site. Charred black ground is strewn with burnt bamboo poles lying at angles, corrugated metal sheets, and smouldering debris including scorched orange cloth. Brick walls stand at the right edge. In the background, several people in saffron and orange robes move among the wreckage, and a tall pink and red kalasha-like pole and red flags rise near the left. Hazy grey sky above.2013-02-15A photograph of a burnt-out encampment at a Kumbh Mela site, with blackened ground, charred debris and bamboo poles standing among ash. Two women in colourful saris stand with arms folded, one in red and orange, the other in red and yellow, beside a young boy in a black jacket and grey trousers. In the background, saffron-clad sadhus and other people move among the remaining tents and structures under a hazy sky.2013-02-15February 15 20132013-02-15February 15 20132013-02-15May 14 20142014-05-14February 15 20132013-02-15September 04 20132013-09-04February 13 20132013-02-13February 13 20132013-02-13February 15 20132013-02-15A group of saffron-robed sannyasis walks along a dusty dirt path beside a corrugated red metal wall and a green-roofed building under a bright sky. In the foreground, a bearded monk in an orange robe with a long dark beard and a second robed figure in orange lead the way. Behind them, a monk with long swept-back hair wears an orange robe and a rudraksha mala. An older bare-chested figure in an orange wrap and a bead necklace walks beside a bearded elder in saffron. Men in white kurtas and dhotis and a man in a white shirt follow, and a small child in a striped shirt walks among them. Wooden posts and a rope line the path.2009-12-30Outdoor scene at an open dirt-floor compound beneath palm trees and thatched-roof sheds. A tall man with long, loose dark hair in an orange-saffron shawl and matching dhoti gestures with his hand toward a stone yantra-like base and a shallow stone bowl on the ground. Around him stand about a dozen men and women in saffron, orange and ochre robes, some with bare shaved heads, one in a yellow turban, and a few men in white dhotis and shirts. A bearded man in brown-orange robes holds an orange bag at the left. A white floodlight is mounted on a pole at the left, and a blue-and-yellow box stands at the lower right. The setting suggests a temple or ashram ritual preparation.2009-12-30
