October 02 20152015-10-02Photograph of a stone ghat on the Ganges at Varanasi in early morning light. Several men bathe in the brown river water, one bare-chested man pouring water with a cupped hand while another stands on the steps holding a white cloth and a plastic bag. A blue-doored shrine with painted Hindi devotional text stands beside a small arched niche where a woman sits. A blue wooden boat lies moored at the right edge, and red railings line the upper terrace.2015-10-02Riverside ghat in Varanasi viewed from the water. Weathered sandstone stepped buildings rise above the Ganges, with a small shrine alcove framed by blue and white painted columns showing deity images. A saffron-clad figure stands at the shrine entrance. In the water in front, a few people wade and bathe, including a bare-chested man in red loincloth and others in white clothing. Laundry hangs over a railing, a small blue boat sits at the right, and a tree shades the upper terraces.2015-10-02A photograph of a red-pillared riverside ghat pavilion with stone steps descending toward the water. Several people in saffron and orange robes stand and sit on a white marble platform with a dark patterned mat laid out. A figure in white kurta and a figure in saffron shawl stand near brass pots and vessels on the left. A man in saffron sits on the steps to the right, and a barefoot bystander in a checked lungi stands at far right. Painted Hindi text and red motifs decorate the wall. A stone shrine niche appears at upper right. He has long, dark, swept-back hair, a red bindi on his forehead, and his eyes are closed. He holds a silver trident upright in his right hand and rests his left hand in his lap. Behind him is a sandstone ghat with arched balconies and steps, a blue-and-red wooden boat on the water, and a signboard reading Dashashwamedh Ghat. Appearance-based cues (long hair, saffron robe, trident) are consistent with a person on the Varanasi Yatra, shown in person.October 02 20152015-10-02Photograph of a weathered sandstone ghat facade in Varanasi with a yellow sign reading Mahanirvani Ghat above an arched doorway. Five men stand on the stone steps in the entrance: on the left, a bearded figure in a pink-and-orange robe; in the centre, a bearded man in a light robe with a loose shawl; and on the right, a man in red-and-orange dress with a red turban holding a garland, plus a smaller figure in orange at the edge.2015-10-03 +1 copiesMarch 19 20142014-03-19January 30 20142014-01-30July 03 20082008-07-03January 30 20142014-01-30
