May 26 20172017-05-26A night-time ritual photograph under a white tent with a red-and-white valance and hanging lights. Priests in white dhotis with gold borders, some bare-chested with saffron-orange shawls, stand and sit around a low platform of offerings: fruit, flower garlands, bowls and betel-leaf trays. Smoke drifts at left where a figure in white pours from a vessel near a golden canopy. A seated priest with a pink turban holds a small dish. Devotees in white saris and saffron shawls stand in a crowd, and a golden deity murti stands among them. A bearded man in a white dhoti with a rudraksha mala stands at right beside a woman in white. Clay offerings and oil lamps sit on a colourful striped cloth.2017-05-26May 02 20172017-05-02Night photograph of a Hindu ritual on an open-air platform beside a brick wall. Several seated priests in white dhotis and bare upper bodies, with yellow garlands and sacred thread, sit around a brass fire vessel with lit flames and oil lamps. Marigold and yellow flower garlands decorate the floor and the ornate golden-yellow throne at the left. Brass vessels and offerings in the foreground. Standing bare-chested participants in white dhotis and orange-clad attendants line the background, and a seated figure in red and orange clothing sits on a throne at the right. Fire and offerings suggest a homa or puja.2017-04-06Inside a temple hall with stone pillars and fluorescent lights, a priest in a dark red-brown dhoti and shawl, with a bare torso, holds a lit flame over a tray in front of him while others stand around in white dhotis, some with yellow and red borders. Several bare-chested men stand with hands folded in namaskar. Trays of banana leaves, coconut-topped kalasha-style vessels, and pink and white flower petals cover the floor. An orange-clad attendant holds a long staff at right. This appears to be a puja or aarti in a temple setting.2018-04-29Night-time homa at an outdoor ritual ground. A fire burns on a yellow-orange raised platform decorated with white and red flower garlands, with a smoke plume rising from the fire pit. Around it, a group of men in white dhotis and white shawls, some with white headcloths, stand and kneel with folded hands; a few wear saffron-orange garments. A bare-chested man in an orange-and-gold cloth stands at right. Brass lamps, trays and metal vessels are set on the ground, with rose petals and flower-covered offerings scattered around. Behind the group hangs a banner with a portrait labelled "Paramahamsa Nithyananda" and the website nithyananda.org. Ritual offerings in the foreground, with a microphone on a stand, suggest a homa or yagna.2015-08-09October 17 20122012-10-17October 15 20132013-10-15April 29 20182018-04-29Night-time homa or yagna at an open-air outdoor ritual space under a blue metal-frame canopy, with smoke haze and string lights above. A fire pit burns at the centre-right with offerings and rice on a yellow-painted platform. Many men and women in white dhotis and saris stand and kneel around it, several bare-chested with white sacred threads. A seated priest in white dhoti and a red headcloth, with a rudraksha-style necklace and tilak, plays a ladle or spoon over a metal vessel. Dozens of decorated coconuts with flower garlands and blue-and-white ribbons sit in rows, with bananas, fruit and a kalasha-like pot nearby. Crowd is visible across the frame.2017-03-11Night-time ritual inside a open-sided tent decorated with mango-leaf strings and hanging orange and red cloth tassels. In the foreground a priest in white dhoti and shawl, with a gold chain, kneels before a white altar-table holding a dark square yantra or puja platform, oil lamps and fruit offerings. Behind him several figures in white and saffron stand at a fire-pit area with rising smoke, one holding a raised kalasha-like vessel. On the left an elderly bearded man with long hair, orange cloth wrapped on his head, white tripundra markings and rudraksha beads stands with palms pressed together, apparently watching the homa. A seated audience in white and orange clothing fills the left and centre, and devotees sit on mats in rows.2010-10-16 +1 copiesApril 06 20172017-04-06
