A photograph inside a temple-like hall where orange-robed sannyasis perform a ritual with a flame. A bald man in an orange robe holds a lit lamp or flame toward a shirtless, bare-chested man standing on a red step, while a man in orange with an orange turban stands in the foreground with his back to the camera and another man in orange leans in from the right. A man in white dhoti and shirt stands with palms pressed together at the right edge, and a man in a white shirt stands behind. A tray of fruit or offerings sits on a small table at left, and a yellow sign with Tamil text hangs on the wall. The scene suggests a Hindu ritual such as aarti or a lamp offering.

A photograph of an outdoor ritual with several orange-clad participants. In the foreground a long-haired man in a saffron wrap and a necklace of gold bead ornaments extends his hand toward a silver aarti lamp with a lit flame, held by a bald, bespectacled man in orange robes with a gold necklace and sandalwood marks on his forehead. Behind them a man in orange holds a brass plate of flowers, and a man in yellow at the left edge rests a hand on his chest beside a video camera. Several onlookers in white and orange stand under trees in the background.

A photograph inside a plain white-walled room during a home visit. In the centre, a woman with long dark hair, wearing a white flower garland and an orange sleeveless garment, stands before a framed devotional picture of a deity with white flower garlands and holds a lit flame toward a small shrine or offering spot. In the foreground right, a figure with long dark hair wears a saffron-yellow shawl with pink borders and is seen from behind. A man in white stands at left, and a boy with his palms pressed together stands at the doorway at right, looking toward a room with green leaves hanging above the door. Visible people number about four, with additional partial figures in the doorway area.

Night-time temple ritual in a stone-pillared hall strung with small lights. A bald elderly priest in an orange-peach shawl holds a brass bell and an oil lamp with a flame, performing aarti before a deity murti draped in a blue cloth with yellow, pink, purple and white flower garlands. Beside him, a man in orange robes with long hair and a tilak presses his palms together in namaste. At left, a figure in an orange turban and orange robe with a long dark mane and a gold necklace smiles with palms joined. A small white statue in orange cloth wearing a flower garland sits on a golden cloth at the foreground, with brass lamps, plates and flower offerings arranged nearby. Several more people in orange stand in the background.

Photograph of a doorway opening onto a room with a golden trishul hanging on the wall. A bald elderly man in a peach-coloured dhoti and rudraksha mala stands barefoot on a doormat, with his hand raised near the frame. Around him, several men in saffron/orange robes stand close; one with long swept-back hair and an orange turban faces away from the camera, and another in an orange dhoti holds a mala, while a man in white dhoti and orange shawl stands nearby. Colourful paper streamers hang overhead and a floral rangoli is on the floor.

A photograph of a ritual moment indoors beside a garlanded doorway with yellow and orange flower garlands. A bearded elderly man with white hair, bare-chested and wearing a white dhoti with a white towel over his shoulder, stands with palms pressed together at his chest, wearing spectacles and a white forehead mark. Beside him a younger man with his hair in a topknot, bare-chested with a white cloth and a red-and-white beaded necklace, holds a brass lamp with a flame and gestures toward him. Behind them, men in saffron-orange robes and a man in white with a tilak stand in the room, and a gold-and-brown cloth hangs on the right.

Outdoor temple-style ritual in a leafy garden setting at a shrine with brick stacks and a gold-trimmed stone platform. A central figure with long dark swept-back hair, a white garland, and an orange robe stands with palms together receiving an aarti plate with a lit flame held by a bare-chested priest wearing a rudraksha mala, sacred ash and an orange dhoti. Around them, several men and young men in saffron and orange robes stand with folded hands, and an elderly man in an orange shirt on the left joins his palms. Behind them, a few people in white and orange watch, and a camera is raised. Rows of brass oil lamps line a ledge on the right. Yellow banners with the letters SIVA stand at the left edge.

A photograph of an indoor ritual inside a decorated temple hall with a red carpet and green lighting. In the centre, an older man with long grey hair and a white beard, wearing orange robes and a yellow-and-pink flower garland, bends forward with his palms pressed together before a lit oil lamp held by a younger attendant. The attendant has a white forehead marking, a gold necklace and orange clothing, and holds the lamp in both hands. Beside them, a plate of pink flower petals sits near the flame. Around them, several people in orange and red robes, rudraksha beads and white forehead marks stand watching, with a bystander in a blue shirt and a man in a striped shirt at the right. Statues and gold-framed decorations line the background. This describes a aarti offering; a person appears as a probable in-person candidate on the basis of the long hair, orange robes, and flower garland, though his face is not used for identification.
