Foni Brefet is one of the nine districts of the Gambia's Western Division, which is located to the south of the Gambia River in the southwest of the country. Foni Brefet is in the center of the division, between Kombo East and Foni Bintang-Karenai.

The ethnic group known as the Jola, Jolla or Diola tribe make up 10% of the Gambian population and are heavily concentrated in the Foni District of west Gambia Their economy has been based on rice cultivation for at least one thousand years. This system has been characterized "one of the most significant examples of 'agrarian or agriculture base civilizations' in West Africa.

The agricultural sector is the most important source of Gambia’s economy, with about 80 percent of the people’s livelihoods depending on it. The agriculture is mostly rain-fed. The crops grown are groundnuts, millet, rice (dry land, irrigated and swamp), sorghum, maize, sesame, cassava, cotton, cashew nuts, coconuts, kola nuts, palm oil, and a variety of vegetables and fruits. Groundnuts and groundnut products are major export commodities. Cultivation practices are traditional.
