The Devi Mahatmyam is a set of 700 verses sung in praise of Devi, the universal feminine energy. It depicts the slaying of evil demons by Devi. The demons in effect represent our own ignorance and ego. Slaying of the demons symbolically represents slaying of our own ignorance and ego. These verses make us aware of the violence, anger, jealousy, hatred, hidden vengeance and all other negative emotions hidden under deep covers within us and destroys them, making us better and better beings every time we read them. They work on us like how Devi worked on the evil demons to destroy them.
