I welcome you all.

Beautiful subject: From Potentiality to Actuality
 +
From the time immemorial, whether spiritual mystics or modern day scientists, everybody is again and again saying man is not using the whole energy or his whole consciousness or his full being. Somewhere he is lacking whether it is physical field or in the mental field or in the being level, conscious level. We are not realizing, actualizing our potentiality. Mystics call it in the name of self realization, actualizing our whole potentiality. Modern day psychologists, they call self actualization. Whether it is self actualization or self realization means the same: realizing your potentiality, actualizing your potentiality. Whether it is your mind or the body or being, we are not expressing our being completely. First of all, we are not experiencing our being completely. Unless we experience, how can we express?

Let Me give you a simple diagram how our mind works, how we get the information, how we process it, why we are not realizing our potentiality, why we are not actualizing our potentiality, where we are missing, where we are lacking. Let Me just explain how we receive the information and process it and how we are doing it, how we are living just the minimal level and actually we can't even say we are living, we are just surviving. Surviving is different and living is different. What we are doing is only surviving. It is not living.

Let Me explain. You receive some information through eyes and then something like Chakshu… in Sanskrit, we call it Chakshu. Let Me explain in the English terms. Something like the DSP in the computer, the whole data is digitized. This area (Swamiji shows a area in the diagram) is called Chaksu. In our eye or ears, in every part of our sense, the chakshu, indriya… we call it indriya. It is available. You understand this much that any data which comes through the eye is processed and made as a digital file. Then that file moves into our memory.
 +
 +
(03:52)
 +
 +
In the memory, you start analyzing what is it. For example, you are seeing this scene now (Swamiji points at His form). You are seeing this scene through the eyes. It is digitized inside your eyes. Then the whole file goes to memory. In memory, your mind starts analyzing, who is this, who is standing. First you start analyzing this is not, this is not, this is not, in this style. First you start analyzing this is not an animal, this is not a plant, this is not a stone. This is not, this is not, this is not. Neti, neti, we call in Sanskrit. First the this is not analysis happens in memory. Then the whole file goes to mind, manas. There you start recognising this is it, this is it. You start understanding he is a human being, he is a teacher or he is conducting a class. This is it. The identification happens in the mind. Then the whole file takes a quantum leap. The whole file takes a quantum leap to your ego. Your ego starts analyzing what I have to do with him, what I am supposed to do with him.
 +

 +
 +
All your past memory with some teachers or some persons who came to take classes, all your past memory comes up. If you had a good time, good memory with them, your ego says, let us sit and listen. If you have not had a good time, if you don't feel happy, if you have not felt happy with them, if you had not a good experience with them, your ego says, better let us move. This is not the place for me to sit. You decide. First the information comes, digitized, goes to memory and the this is not, this is not, that happens in memory. This is it, this is it, happens in the mind. Then the whole file takes a quantum leap. Here you start understanding, you start analyzing what is there for me with this situation. In this situation what I am supposed to do, that is done by ego. The decision comes back and again you act according to the decision.

Here few things we need to look. From eye to mind, whole thing happens in a conscious way, logical way, clear way, intelligent way but suddenly when the whole file takes the quantum leap, here you have some memories which are not logically related to this situation. See, just because you had some bad experience with some teacher, it is not that you are going to have the same and our mind is so reactive, our mind is so unconscious, if you have been hurt by somebody with white cloth, whenever you see somebody wearing a white cloth, the same memory will come up. Automatically you tend to move away from that situation, move away from that person. The memories which gave you pain, the memories which disturbed you, stress, all these things are stored here. Continuously again and again, you decide based on those memories, based on that reactive mind. We call it Samskaras in Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, we call it samskaras. The field of psychology, they call it engrams.

 +
These prints, so illogical, irrational, your mind is continuously processing, taking decisions based on illogical, irrational data. Till from eye to mind, the whole thing is logic, conscious, intelligent but when the quantum leap happens, you suddenly decide for no reason and after that you repent, “Oh!, I shouldn't have done that. I think that is not part of me.” If you feel after doing something I shouldn't have done that or if you feel that, that is not like me, that is not part of me, that portion of life somehow I am not able to rationalize. If you have this type of feeling, be very clear, your unconscious is only in the instinct level. Your unconscious is only in the instinct level. One more thing, from here to here, all the data which you collect says smoking is injurious to health but suddenly when the file takes a quantum leap, you decide to smoke. You smoke, then you repent. After that, again you repent.
 +
 +
(08:58)
 +
 +
When a file takes this leap, this quantum leap into unconsciousness, first thing, we act in a instinct level. Next thing, an important thing, our potentiality is never realized. Our potentiality never becomes actuality. Why, you may ask why. Because the more the samskaras, the more the engrams, more process is needed to be done. The same file has to go through so many disturbances, so many impediments before you take the decision. The more you are filled with samskaras, the more you are filled with reactive mind, the more you are filled with unconscious mind, the less decisions you make. If one file comes to this spot before you take the decision, the file has to go through at least twenty tables. The more the table the file has to move, more the time it is going to take, more the time it is going to take. The more the table the file has to move, naturally the decision is going to be distorted.
 +
 +
(10:14)
 +
 +
You see, hands can be thousand but head has to be one, but here so many heads in one decision. Naturally it is going to be confusion. It is going to be disturbance and above all, much of your energy is wasted in a single decision. Almost your major part of energy is blocked in this area itself. It is like your hard disc is filled with high resolution photographs. When your hard disc is filled, you can't handle any other data. It is almost like your hard disc is filled with high resolution photographs, unconscious. Too much of past memory, too much of samskaras, too much of reactive mind. As long as this...
 +
 +
(11:07)
 +
 +
Let Me give you one more equation. From the information which the processing time from eye to the mind which happens in a conscious level, I call it as TP - time taken for processing and this I call it as TQ, the quantum leap time, quantum leap time. See, as long as the TP is equal to the TQ, you are in intellectual level. When the TP is more and the TQ is less means.... TQ is less and TP is more, you are in instinct level, you are in instinct level. You are just slave of your reactive mind. You are just slave of your unconscious mind. When TQ is more than TP, you are in the level of intuition. Instinct, intellect, intuition. As long as this time is too small… actually when the tables are more, when the memories are more, you will be continuously restless. Immediately the file will come out with some confused decision. You don't take enough time, you don't take enough interest in anything. You will be just feeling like finishing it.
 +
 +
(13:17)
 +
 +
In one of the Eastern scriptures, it says there is a beautiful quotation. It says, don't expect the results. Do intensely your duty. Doesn't mean that you will not have your salary. You will have your salary. When you work continuously, you will not bother about the result. When you are continuously bothered about the result, you will not give enough time for TQ. You will be just hurrying, continuously passing judgements without giving enough time. When you continuously pass judgements without giving enough time for this TQ process, enough time for this process, naturally not only you are going to take wrong decisions, you will be just in the level of instinct, survival level.
 +
 +
(14:06)
 +
 +
As on now, almost all our decisions are taken only in the survival level, instinct level. We don't even live logically. That is why, end of the day, everyday we repent, “What am I doing? Something I did, something it happened. And I think I am not part of this. I think I am in wrong place.” And after sometime you start repenting, you start feeling, “I think that part of me is not logically matching me.” In twenty hours, you are in one way. Suddenly for two hours, you are in a different mood. If you have the swing of moods or dilemmas, be very clear, you are just in the instinct level. You decide, we do things just in the level of instinct level means we are just surviving, we are just surviving.

Let Me give you a small story. After the second world war, in a tribal village in Germany, they abandoned a small open aircraft. These army people, you know, they don't take everything back. They just abandoned a small open aircraft and these tribal villagers, they have not seen even the tractor. They don't know anything about the aircraft. They thought it must be a bullock cart. So they put big bullock in front of it and started using it as a bullock cart. After few months, one young boy came to that village and he said, “No, no, no. This must be tractor.” Because he has seen tractor, he started telling this must be a tractor and he started driving it. After few months, one retired pilot came to that place and he said, “This is neither bullock cart nor tractor, it is a aircraft.” He started showing them how to use it.
 +
 +
(16:02)
 +
 +
Same way, we don't realize our potentiality. We don't actualize our potentiality. As long as we are in instinct level, we are using our system only as a bullock cart. The person who has reached TP equal to TQ means the whole thing has become conscious process. He has no vertical line. All he has got is only horizontal line means the person who is not repenting for any of his decision. If you don't repent for any of your decision in the end of the day, you are in the level of intellect. You are in the level of intellect. You are using your system as a tractor and if you feel continuously rejuvenated, happy about your decisions, if you are excited to live, you are in the level of intuition, means not only you don't have unconscious, you start growing in this line. You have super conscious.
 +
 +
(17:05)
 +
 +
If this vertical line is straightened, you are in the level of intellect. If it starts going up, you are in the level of intuition. All we need to do is create the gap in this layer. As on now, you have too many tables means too many persons processing one file, too much of engrams, too much of reactive mind, too many memories about the past, about yourself, about the whole life, too many judgements. Actually two things: One is collecting all the arguments and passing the judgment. Another one is having your judgment ready, just collecting arguments to support that judgment. Most of the time we are ready with our judgment. We just collect our arguments to support our judgment. When we are in that level, we are just instinct level, surviving, that's all.
 +
 +
(18:14)
 +
 +
Person who is in the Instinct level will continuously feel tired. Even if he works for two-three hours, he will be tired. You can see in your life. You don't have to do anything. Just sit in your chair, get stressed out for half an hour, you will have a shoulder pain. You don't have to do anything, just get stressed out. You don't even have to pick your pen. You will have shoulder pain because we are living in a instinct level. When you come up to the intellect level means less number of tables here, less tables, less reactive mind, not too much of disturbing memories, not too much of suppressions, then your whole unconscious becomes conscious, you are in intellect level. How to find out whether we are in intellect level or not? End of the day, you will not feel tired. You will be just relaxed. You will be there as you are. If you are in the intuition level, not only you will not feel tired, you will feel rejuvenated.
 +
 +
(19:27)
 +
 +
There is a beautiful aphorism in Ayurveda. They say how can you be tired when you are old? The more you grow, more you should become rejuvenated because now you know the art of living with the body. When you are younger, when you are young, you don't know the art of living with the body. The more you grow, now you know the art of living with your body. So by now, you must be more rejuvenated, more alive, more fresh and more excited. If you are tired by growing old, if you are feeling dull, if you are feeling depressed, something is wrong in your whole system. What you say looks very logical. See, the more you do some job, the more you will be efficient in the job. You will be able to do the same job without much effort. That is supposed to be the logic. Same way, if you are able to live with this body and if you have been trained to live in this body, after few years, you should not feel tired. You should feel more rejuvenated. You are supposed to feel more excited, energetic.

Organizer: On behalf of Nithyananda Foundation I welcome you all to tonight's discourse. The topic of the discourse is- Master, the Zen stick. In this discourse, the Master Paramahamsa Sri Nityananda will speak about who is a master, what are the different multitudes in which the master works, the relationship of a master with the seekers, with the disciples. Swamiji, as we call Him always comes up with very interesting titles when he gives discourses on. However there is only one message. The message is to live our potential- Be Blissful. With this, I will hand it over to Swamiji. This is going to be a very enlightening speech, lecture and it is going to be amusing too.

Master, the Zen stick
 +
Let Me first explain what I mean by the word Zen stick. Zen stick is the stick used by the zen masters to awaken the disciples. It is used with lot of love and care, used only towards the disciples who are very close and intimate, not on anybody and everybody. If it is on anybody and everybody, it is just Danda. When it is used only towards the close disciples, it is Yoga Danda. The zen stick is Yoga Danda, a stick used towards the close disciples to awaken them and I tell you one important thing. The greatest relationship not only in this world, in any possible world or I can say in all the worlds, the whole universe the greatest relationship is the master-disciple relationship.

Somehow in the modern day, man is missing the beauty of that relationship. Of course, now all the relationships are replaced…. and practically now we don't know what is relationship. The relationship of husband and wife is now replaced. Now no more wife is a wife, just a girlfriend. You can stay as long as you want. When you want, you can leave. Wife is just a girlfriend. Husband is just boyfriend. In Vedic system, the very idea divorce is not existing. We don't have a Sanskrit word for divorce. In Sanskrit, there is no equivalent word for divorce is available. According to Vedic system, no divorce is possible. Even the idea doesn't exist. Now in the modern day, the more man is becoming modern, the relationships are becoming shallow. Because of the idea of this divorce, wife is no more a wife, just a girlfriend. As long as you get along, stay together. When you are not able to, say bye. The husband is no more an husband, he is a boyfriend. The relationships have become very shallow.
 +
 +
(06:08)
 +
 +
Boyfriend or girlfriend is okay, good but it is not deep. The things which can happen only in the deeper levels can never happen. It is just physical. When the relationships become shallow, you live, touch only the physical layers of the other beings, not more than that. If you go back to Indian villages and just thirty-forty years ago, even your own fathers or grandfathers, if you go to their villages, you can listen the stories, the husband and wife both of them died in the same day. You can hear this type of stories. At least one couple in every village you can hear. If you go back to your village and trace, at least you can hear one story. The elderly grandfather he died morning and evening wife also died. See the depth of relationship. The other one feels, “The life is empty. What am I going to do? Enough!” Of course, I am not saying all of you should die when your husband dies. I am not saying all of you should die when your wife dies. No, but I am saying, see the depth of relationship which existed.
 +
 +
(07:42)
 +
 +
In the Saptapadi, in Vedic system, at the time of marriage they take a beautiful oath or vow, commitment to each other. The husband says, “I will be there for you till I die.” And the wife says, “I will be there for you till I die.” There is one more beautiful vow they are blessed, the husband is blessed, let you become eleventh child of your wife. The wife is blessed, let you become the eleventh.... let you become a mother of your wife in the eleventh year. The wife is supposed to become mother. The husband is supposed to become a child and really when a deep relationship happens, when the souls are touched, the relationship enters into a different level. It gets matured and sees the ultimate.
 +
 +
(08:57)
 +
 +
A mother reaches the…a woman reaches the ultimate expression when she becomes a mother. She experiences the fulfillment. She experiences fulfillment when she becomes a mother. Till she reaches the maturity of the mother, she is missing something. Only when she becomes mother in a maturity level, not simply in the physical level, in maturity level, she reaches the fulfillment. Man reaches his fulfillment when he again becomes a child. When he becomes just a simple innocent being, he achieves the fulfillment. That is why, you can see all women enlightened masters, they will be expressing their motherhood and the all enlightened masters, all men, enlightened masters they will be expressing the innocence. They will be radiating the innocence. Even the title for man when a man becomes enlightened, he is called Paramahamsa. Paramahamsa means a man who has again become a child, who has entered into the space of innocence.
 +
 +
(10:17)
 +
 +
When woman becomes enlightened, she is addressed as a ‘Ma’ means who has become mother, Janani of the whole world, universe. The ultimate flowering happens only when you are deeply committed to the other person. Only in the depth, you can flower. The real experience or the real sharing happens. You should understand this word, ‘sharing.’ Actually when you relate deeply, you don't just give, you just share. Giving means again you are in high pedestal and you say you are taking. The word giving has got a line of ego in it means you are in high pedestal. The person who is receiving is in the lower level. You are just giving but when a relationship happens, you neither give nor take, just you share. It is so much, it is just overflowing. You share. You open and you share. You create so much of space for yourself and for the other person. You just share your space.

In Bhagavata, they mention five beautiful relationships. The relationship of mother and the child. They say Bhakti Bhavanas. You can relate through all these five ways with the Master or the God, Guru or the God. You can relate with them through these five ways. One is like a mother and the child. The next is lord and servant. The mother and the child is like a Yashoda, how Yashoda related with Krishna. And lord and the servant, how Hanuman related with the Rama. And God as the mother, how Sri Ramakrishna related with Mother Kali and friend Sakha Bhava, Sakhya Bhava. In Sanskrit, they call it Sakha Bhava. As a friend, how Arjuna related with Krishna and the ultimate in the end, Madhura Bhava, looking at the lord or the master as a beloved, the bhava which is experienced by Radha towards the Krishna. These are the five relationships and they say in the end, the master-disciple relationship is much more deeper than all these five, all these five put together. Not only deeper than all these five, deeper than all these five put together. Only a person who is blessed to have a master and who is blessed to have a deep trust on master.

You see, having a master is very easy. Because in the market so many are available and even if you don't want, you will have….you will have to have because so many are available, what will you do? When you again and again see McDonald's Tower you feel like eating. You are tempted. So when you again and again see so many masters, naturally you will feel tempted to be connected to some master, to go and see some master. Having a master is very easy. I always tell, in those days it is a sellers market. Now it is buyers market. Now it has become buyers market. Having a master is very easy to claim, to brag, “You see, I am the disciple of that master. I go and listen to him. I go and attend him.” Very easy but really opening your being is the great thing. That is the real thing. I tell you, to whom you are opening, it is not important, if you are opening that is enough, you are enlightened.
 +
 +
(03:18)
 +
 +
People come and ask Me, “Swamiji, there are so many gurus. We are confused. What to do? Whom should we follow?” I tell them, “Don't bother whom you are following. Follow someone deeply. That's enough. Intensely relate with someone whom you feel very attached. Anybody, whomsoever he maybe. If you are feeling attached, whom your heart feels attached, just intensely go with him, intensely go with him, open to him intensely, that's enough. Even if he is not enlightened, you will become enlightened.” I tell you, even if he is not enlightened, you will become enlightened.

There is a beautiful story by Ramakrishna. One  Bhagawat pandit means a preacher, not enlightened person but a preacher. He stays in the one bank of Jamuna and he used to do Pooja everyday for Krishna. One milkmaid used to take milk for him everyday. One day, there was a flood in the Jamuna river. So she was not able to go. She was not able to reach him on time. She went little late.
 +
This guy started shouting, “What is happening? Why didn't you bring in time? I have to do Pooja in time.” Doing Pooja is different. He has to eat.
 +
Anyhow, she said, “Oh! There was a flood. I can't cross the Jamuna. What to do. That is the reason. I have to wait for boatman. That is the reason I am late.”
 +
He said, “What? People are crossing the ocean of Samsara with Krishna's name. Can't you cross just this Jamuna with Krishna's name?”
 +
She just took it very seriously. She said, “Oh! Is it so? Alright, tomorrow onwards I will come in time. Please forgive me, master.”
 +
 +
(05:23)
 +
 +
Next day she was on time. Everyday she started coming in time.
 +
This guy asked, “How? How are you able to manage? How are you coming in time?”
 +
She said in a very innocent way, “What? You only taught me. You told me I can take Krishna's name and cross the river. That's what I am doing.”
 +
He asked, “How? How are you doing?”
 +
She said, “I take Krishna's name and just walk on the river and come this side. That's all.”
 +
This guy said, “How can it be? It can never be. Tell me the truth.”
 +
She says, “Come, I will show you.”
 +
 +
(06:04)
 +
 +
She took him and she just started taking the Krishna's name, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, started walking on the river. This guy thought, “When my disciple can do, why not me? When my disciple can do, why not me?” He just went near the river, started chanting Krishna, Krishna and lifting the cloth. And he started chanting Krishna, Krishna but lifting the cloth and he is afraid the cloth may become wet. Naturally he fell in the river and went away with the river. You see, he may not be enlightened. He has not realized the power of that mantra but she realized because she opened. So don't bother to whom you are opening. You can open to anybody. The very opening will liberate you. The very trust will liberate you. The very depth of the relationship will make you enlightened but the difficulty is in the modern day, man has lost even idea. He doesn't have even an idea about how to relate with others.
 +
 +
(07:20)
 +
 +
All your relationships are pseudo, so-so. You play a very safe game. You are afraid. If you put your hands, you may not be able to take it back. We don't let go. We don't allow ourself in any relationship and I tell you one thing, because you don't relate intensely, you will not be able to let go the relationships also. When you don't live intensely, you can't leave it. The person who lives intensely will be ready to leave also. It is a paradox. Living and leaving, both are one and the same. If you can live, you will be able to leave. If you can't live, you will never be able to leave. You will be a slave forever. Whether living or leaving, it is a capacity. It is a ability which comes to you when you start living intensely.
 +
 +
(08:23)
 +
 +
All your relationship is very pseudo, superficial. We never believe the other person is honest because we are not honest. We never believe the other person is honest because we are not honest. In any relationship, not only the husband and wife or the servant and the boss or the friends, in no relationship we believe, we trust the other person is honest because we are not honest. We don't even know the meaning of the word relationship. All we know is a business, bargain. If you are giving this much attention, I will give you that much attention. If you are coming this much, I will come this much. It is almost like a fighting or begging. Either fighting or begging. Either fighting or begging. We don't know anything called relationship because we don't know even the ordinary relationship. We don't understand the depth of the relationship between master and disciple.
 +
 +
(09:47)
 +
 +
And I always tell people, these so-called disciples are the real problem creators. These so-called disciples are the real problem creators. They neither understand what Master says nor relate with Him. Neither understand nor relate. They understand their own things and they are also in trouble, they try to put Master also in trouble. Of course, the Masters never get into trouble, that is different. Masters are just enlightened beings. They never get into the trouble but usually when you don't understand the Master, you hurt yourself.
 +
 +
(10:32)
 +
 +
There is a beautiful story how we try to use Master just as a support. You see, we never go to the Master for solution. We always go to him only for support. Beautiful story in the life of Shankara. Shankara is traveling from village to village. In India, there is something called Parivrajaka Yatra means traveling from place to place. Anybody who is supposed to become a teacher or Acharya, in India he has to travel from village to village because he should know the current affairs. He should know the society. He should know the lifestyle, straightaway living with them. You can't sit in a palace and preach. No. Preachers are not allowed to stay away from the people. They have to directly relate with them. That is why, all the preachers take the vow of poverty and begging.
 +
 +
(11:51)
 +
 +
In India, the preachers can't become a preacher unless they live with the common mass, they live with the society, living with them, staying with them, eating their food. Unless you travel length and breadth of India, unless you do the Parivrajaka yatra, you can't become a teacher. You can't know about the society by reading books. You can't learn about what people want by sitting in a palace. No. You have to travel all over the world, all over the country. Only then you can become a preacher or a teacher.

So Shankara is supposed to become a preacher. So he is traveling. He is doing his Parivrajaka Yatra with his few disciples or followers. Suddenly he felt thirsty and he didn't have anything to drink. Nearby he saw a village arrack shop, village liquor shop and he went inside, asked them to give something. Naturally what else they can give? They had only liquor and they offered. He simply started drinking. He drank and till he felt contented, he drank, he finished. After that, he said, “Let us go.” The disciples were shocked. What is this? But one side they felt happy. “Oh! When Master drinks, why not us?” All these guys also started drinking, finished. Shankara started walking steadily but these guys started dancing this way and that way. Anyhow they managed to follow Shankara.

After few days, they were traveling in some other area. Again Shankar felt thirsty. There was no shop. There was nobody but there was only one shop, a smith shop, the person is melting the hot iron and molding images and furnitures. It is a smith shop, iron smith. He just walked into that smith shop, asked that guy who is working, “Do you have anything to drink?” He said, “No, we don't have anything.” But he saw that hot iron, the melted iron, the liquid form. He just put his hand and started drinking the hot iron. Just he started drinking that liquid iron. After drinking, he looked at the disciples and said, “Drink.” And you know what will be their reaction. These guys are ready to follow the Master when he drinks liquor but not hot iron. Never, never, never try to imitate the Master.

I have seen people spoiling their life by imitating and it is not even imitation, it is just trying to quote the Master to support your weaknesses. I have seen many people.
 +
 +
People come and ask Me, “Vivekananda used to smoke. Vivekananda used to drink. Why not we smoke? Why should we not smoke?”
 +
 +
I tell them, “Vivekananda started smoking after becoming enlightened. You also become enlightened. Then smoke.”
 +
 +
People just quote….that’s what they say that devil quotes the Bible. Devil quotes the Bible. Devil also can quote Bible and prove what he says is right. Actually when you pick up only the sentences which you want, you can always prove what you say is right. I have seen many people quoting the master and justifying what they are doing.

All our relationship is very shallow. Even with master it is very shallow. We go to the extreme, we go to the extent only as much as we can accept. As long as he is not touching our ego, whatever he says is truth for us. We accept. We shake our head, “Oh! It is great. He is a great person, he is a great Swami, he is a great Mahatma, he is a great saint,” and what not! We have all the great words. The moment the person touches our ego, the moment you are not given the front row. The front row is the big idea. The front row has the VIP seat. Immediately we say, “Oh! I think his teachings are not for me.” That is the first word. Then next, “I think what he is saying is not going to work for others also.” Then we have our own words.
 +
 +
(01:20)
 +
 +
As long as our ego is satisfied, things go well. That is what I tell many times, “Don't think I am a master, you are a follower. Many times you only behave as a master and I have to follow. I am a follower.” That is what actually happens. Ramana Maharshi says beautifully, “When people come, they are disciples. After sometime they become masters.” That is what actually happens. After sometime… and one more thing, the important thing, the masters are such innocent beings, they just bend as you want. They don't usually stand and they don't usually...... usually the masters, they are very…. what to say that…. they are more like a breeze. They are not like a Tornado, they are just like a breeze. They say, “Alright! If that is the case, do it as you want.”

Somebody goes to Ramana Maharshi and asks him, “Master, what should I do for enlightenment?”
 +
 +
Bhagawan says, “Do self enquiry. Enquire who are you.”
 +
 +
After a month he comes back, “It is too difficult, master. Can I do something else? Can I do meditation?”
 +
 +
Bhagwan says, “Alright, do. What can be done?”
 +
 +
After a month, again this guy comes back and says, “Can I do repetition of Mantra or Japa? Meditation is too difficult.”
 +
 +
Bhagawan says, “Alright.”
 +
 +
After a month, again this guy comes back, “Can I do just bhajan instead of Japa? Japa is too difficult.”
 +
 +
Again Bhagawan says, “Alright. What can be done?”
 +
 +
Again after a month, this guy comes back and says, “Can I do Pooja? I think that is the best thing for me.”
 +
 +
Again master says, “Alright.”
 +

(03:25)

The masters allow you, give you so much of freedom because they trust you. Masters trust the disciple. That is the reason they give so much of freedom but the big difficulty is we can never believe that we are trustworthy. That is where the problem starts. We can never believe we are trustworthy because nobody has trusted us in our life. Either nobody trusted or we never trusted that somebody trusts us. Anybody if they show some sign that they are trusting us, we immediately calculate, “I think this guy must be having some other calculation, must be having some reason. Otherwise why should he trust me? Because I don't trust. Then naturally he will also be doing the same thing only. When I smile, I have my own calculation. For this benefit, I can open this much mouth. For this benefit, this is the area or this is the width. I know the calculation. When I do the calculation, naturally he will also be doing the same thing.”
 +
 +
(04:43)
 +
 +
When somebody smiles at you, you can't trust he is expressing his love. It is very difficult. It is very difficult and it is very difficult to trust that others can trust you. Even in ordinary relationship, we don't trust others can trust us. If at all somebody expresses their love really, you try to find some reason, “Maybe that guy is feeling lonely that he want to talk to me. That's why he rang up.” When they don't ring up, you say, “Oh! He is not taking care. He never gives time. He never gives attention.” If at all he rings up, you say, “Maybe he must be feeling lonely. He wants to talk to me. He wants to spend some time with me. He wants some company.” And if you are not able to find any reason, you just neglect, “Oh! Maybe by mistake something is happening.”
 +
 +
(05:45)
 +
 +
We never trust that we are trustworthy even in ordinary relationships and you play a very safe game. You stretch your hands only that much, that same distance at any moment you must be able to take it, you will be able to take away. You play a very safe game with any relationship. When you play a safe game, you are safe, secured but graveyard security. In graveyard, you are totally secured but you are not alive. When you play a safe game in your relationships, you experience the security and safety which you experience in the graveyards, the security or safety of dead. You see, in graveyard, there is no problem. You are totally secured, totally safe. No problem, nothing to lose. You are experiencing the same security, same safety when you play a safe game in the relationships. You don't open yourself totally even in the ordinary relationships. When you don't open yourself even in the ordinary relationships, how can you open yourself with the master?
 +

(07:11)
 +
 +
Somebody goes to Ramanuja, a great enlightened master who happened in South India. Somebody goes to him and asks, “Master, please teach me how to have the devotion, how to have bhakti.”
 +
Ramanuja says, “Have you fallen in love with anybody? Have you experienced a real deep relationship?”
 +
This guy is shocked! “What? What are you teaching? I have come to learn bhakti. I am a pure brahmachari. How can you ask me that to go and fall in love with somebody or I have experienced love?”
 +
 +
(07:58)
 +
 +
Ramanuja just laughs and he says, “If you can't fall in love with somebody whom you are seeing everyday, people you are seeing everyday, with whom you are relating everyday, how can you fall in love with somebody whom you have never seen God? If you can't love your wife I tell you, really you can't love your God because everyday you are seeing that person. If you can't relate with that person, how can you relate with God whom you are not seeing? If you can't love your husband, if you can't love your kids, never think you can love God. All our devotion is a escapism and I tell you, all our so-called devotion is nothing but having pet animals. When you can't love your husband or wife, human beings, you start having pet animals to vent, to express your being, to open up. Same way, all our Pooja, all our Gods, all our Gurus are nothing but pet animals. Be very clear, don't keep Gods and Gurus as a pet animals. They are not supposed to be kept as a pet animals.
 +
 +
(09:10)
 +
 +
If you look into the psychology, if you look deeply into the whole system, really our God or our Guru or our meditation, everything is pets for us. As long as they obey what we say, we keep them. The moment we feel that they are not obeying us, they are not obedient to us, they are not practical for your day-to-day life, you say, “Enough! I think this master is not for me.” After that we say, “I think this master is not at all master.” After that we start judging. The masters again and again teach you don't judge but you start judging the masters. These are some of the wonderful dramas we do with the masters. The modern man can never understand or relate to the word master-disciple relationship and this is the relationship which is more stronger, which is more solid than all other possible relationships put together.
 +
 +
(10:31)
 +
 +
Ramakrishna says beautifully. He says, attachment towards the money, a miser... the miser's attachment towards the money and a chaste wife's attachment towards the husband and a friend’s attachment towards his close friend, all these three put together and something more is what he calls bhakti or the relationship between master and the disciple. Only then you are really connected. When you are really deeply connected, there can be no side effect, after effect except Bliss. Except Bliss nothing else can happen. There can never be suffering in the master-disciple relationship. If at all there is suffering, please be very clear, it has not happened. The relationship has not yet happened. If there is suffering, means the relationship has not yet happened. You are just playing in a superficial way or you are dating, dating with the master, that's all. You are not really relating with the master. You are just outing, nothing else. See, it is a very superficial. Dating is very superficial. Today you can go, tomorrow you can just say bye. No, but in the real relationship, it is a deep commitment. In the Saptapadi…. Saptapadi means the seven steps which they take at the time of marriage. That is a beautiful slokas. All of you should understand. Now-a-days usually we don't even know the meaning because only purohits get married. Those guys chant and put the mangalsutra, that’s all. You simply witness and pose for photograph and come back. We don't even know the meaning of those mantras. It is the wonderful mantras which says…actually the concept of marriage or relationship is very clearly explained in that mantra. When the other person is in depression, you are supposed to take care of him as a mother. When she is in depression or low mood, you are supposed to take care as a father, that's all. That's all is the whole relationship and very clearly it says, except the time other person needs your help, you will not bind or force, put any rules on the other person. Whenever he needs help, you will extend your being. When she needs help, you will open up yourself. Except at the time of need and the help, you will not put any rule, any bondage, any regulation on the other person. You will not suffocate the other person.
 +
 +
(13:48)
 +
 +
Of course, when a relationship becomes deeper and deeper, you relate with your full heart, with your whole being but you never suffocate. When the relationship is superficial, physical, you again and again possess that person and suffocate because you don't know anything except physical. Why do you think we need so much of time with the other person? Physically why do you want that person around you? Because you are again and again confirming that he is loving you or she is loving you. When you are not trusting that other person loves you, you wanted the confirmation from him by again and again asking him to be around you, physically asking him to be around you. The physical nearness is the confirmation which you are expecting from the other person as a proof that he loves you or she loves you.
 +
 +
(14:53)
 +
 +
When we don't trust, when our relationship is superficial, it is only physical. It is in a very superficial level, physical. When you go deeper and deeper, when you grow into the maturity, when you really start relating, that person may be in India, you may be in America or thousands of miles away but you will see you are totally connected to him. You are deeply connected to that person. You don't need even to talk to him. You don't even have to see him but you will have a deep satisfaction or the feeling connected. You will just feel he is there for you and she is there for you. You will feel totally connected. If you can feel really connected, even your husband and wife relationship can become path to enlightenment. Even that can transform you. That can become a real spiritual practice.
 +
 +
(16:02)
 +
 +
When we can't relate with the our own people, how do you think you will be able to relate with God? No, never. Only when a relationship becomes mature, only in the deeper level of relationship, the zen stick is used. Zen stick- it is a wonderful word, a very word brings Me so much of wonderful and beautiful memories. I am remembering so many wonderful stories. I feel like a… it is like a… so many stories are coming and fighting in My throat, “I wanted to come out first, I wanted to come out first.” I don't know which story will come out first. They are all fighting with each other, “I will go out first, I will go out first.” It is like a gift from the master for your deep trust and love towards him.
 +
 +
(17:07)
 +
 +
These great masters, the zen masters, they used to have a stick and when a disciple needs to become aware of something, if he is not listening the teachings properly, he is sitting in the class or sleeping or he has not understood something properly, they take the stick and beat the disciple. They just throw the stick on the person. It is done with so much of love, with so much of care only to the persons who are very close to the master or towards whom really master feels concerned or he really feels caring. Only towards them the stick is used. You can't use the stick towards anybody and everybody. They will sue you, they will sue you and you see, understand one thing, using the words and scolding is different and physically using the stick is totally different. Physically a master has to use the stick means what intimacy will exist? What kind of relationship would have happened between the master and disciple? How beautiful it would have been? How I can say that, that must be the much deeper than beloved relationship, much deeper relationship than between beloveds…. Of course, it can never be explained intellectually. It can never be explained by words. Only when you melt down, only when you melt, you can even understand the words, you can even understand this experience.

Potentiality to Actuality || Part 1 || Spiritual Discourse || 22 April 2005

(0:15)

I welcome you all. Beautiful subject: From Potentiality to Actuality From the time immemorial, whether spiritual mystics or modern day scientists, everybody is again and again saying man is not using the whole energy or his whole consciousness or his full being.

(02:08)

Let Me give you a simple diagram how our mind works, how we get the information, how we process it, why we are not realizing our potentiality, why we are not actualizing our potentiality, where we are missing, where we are lacking. Let Me just explain how we receive the information and process it and how we are doing it, how we are living just the minimal level and actually we can't even say we are living, we are just surviving. Surviving is different and living is different. What we are doing is only surviving. It is not living.

(03:01)

Let Me explain. You receive some information through eyes and then something like Chakshu… in Sanskrit, we call it Chakshu. Let Me explain in the English terms. Something like the DSP in the computer, the whole data is digitized. This area (Swamiji shows a area in the diagram) is called Chaksu. In our eye or ears, in every part of our sense, the chakshu, indriya… we call it indriya. It is available. You understand this much that any data which comes through the eye is processed and made as a digital file. Then that file moves into our memory.

(03:52)

(05:15)

(06:18)

(07:36)

(08:58)

(10:14)

You see, hands can be thousand but head has to be one, but here so many heads in one decision. Naturally it is going to be confusion. It is going to be disturbance and above all, much of your energy is wasted in a single decision. Almost your major part of energy is blocked in this area itself. It is like your hard disc is filled with high resolution photographs. When your hard disc is filled, you can't handle any other data. It is almost like your hard disc is filled with high resolution photographs, unconscious. Too much of past memory, too much of samskaras, too much of reactive mind. As long as this...

(11:07)

(13:17)

In one of the Eastern scriptures, it says there is a beautiful quotation. It says, don't expect the results. Do intensely your duty. Doesn't mean that you will not have your salary. You will have your salary. When you work continuously, you will not bother about the result. When you are continuously bothered about the result, you will not give enough time for TQ. You will be just hurrying, continuously passing judgements without giving enough time. When you continuously pass judgements without giving enough time for this TQ process, enough time for this process, naturally not only you are going to take wrong decisions, you will be just in the level of instinct, survival level.

(14:06)

(15:02)

(16:02)

(17:05)

(18:14)

(19:27)

Swamiji: Brahmānanandam parama sukhadam kevalam jnānamurtim Dvandvāteetam gaganasadruśam tatvamasyādi lakśyam Ekam nityam vimalamachalam sarvadheesākśibhutam Bhāvāteetam triguna rahitam sadgurum tam namāmi

I welcome you all with My love and respects.

(03:01)

Master, the Zen stick Let Me first explain what I mean by the word Zen stick.

(04:24)

(06:08)

(07:42)

(08:57)

(10:17)

(02:13)

(03:18)

People come and ask Me, “Swamiji, there are so many gurus. We are confused. What to do? Whom should we follow?” I tell them, “Don't bother whom you are following. Follow someone deeply. That's enough. Intensely relate with someone whom you feel very attached. Anybody, whomsoever he maybe. If you are feeling attached, whom your heart feels attached, just intensely go with him, intensely go with him, open to him intensely, that's enough. Even if he is not enlightened, you will become enlightened.” I tell you, even if he is not enlightened, you will become enlightened.

(04:00)

There is a beautiful story by Ramakrishna. One Bhagawat pandit means a preacher, not enlightened person but a preacher. He stays in the one bank of Jamuna and he used to do Pooja everyday for Krishna. One milkmaid used to take milk for him everyday. One day, there was a flood in the Jamuna river. So she was not able to go. She was not able to reach him on time. She went little late. This guy started shouting, “What is happening? Why didn't you bring in time? I have to do Pooja in time.” Doing Pooja is different. He has to eat. Anyhow, she said, “Oh! There was a flood. I can't cross the Jamuna. What to do. That is the reason. I have to wait for boatman. That is the reason I am late.” He said, “What? People are crossing the ocean of Samsara with Krishna's name. Can't you cross just this Jamuna with Krishna's name?” She just took it very seriously. She said, “Oh! Is it so? Alright, tomorrow onwards I will come in time. Please forgive me, master.”

(05:23)

Next day she was on time. Everyday she started coming in time. This guy asked, “How? How are you able to manage? How are you coming in time?” She said in a very innocent way, “What? You only taught me. You told me I can take Krishna's name and cross the river. That's what I am doing.” He asked, “How? How are you doing?” She said, “I take Krishna's name and just walk on the river and come this side. That's all.” This guy said, “How can it be? It can never be. Tell me the truth.” She says, “Come, I will show you.”

(06:04)

(07:20)

(08:23)

(09:47)

And I always tell people, these so-called disciples are the real problem creators. These so-called disciples are the real problem creators. They neither understand what Master says nor relate with Him. Neither understand nor relate. They understand their own things and they are also in trouble, they try to put Master also in trouble. Of course, the Masters never get into trouble, that is different. Masters are just enlightened beings. They never get into the trouble but usually when you don't understand the Master, you hurt yourself.

(10:32)

(11:51)

In India, the preachers can't become a preacher unless they live with the common mass, they live with the society, living with them, staying with them, eating their food. Unless you travel length and breadth of India, unless you do the Parivrajaka yatra, you can't become a teacher. You can't know about the society by reading books. You can't learn about what people want by sitting in a palace. No. You have to travel all over the world, all over the country. Only then you can become a preacher or a teacher.

(12:38)

(13:50)

(15:10)

I have seen people spoiling their life by imitating and it is not even imitation, it is just trying to quote the Master to support your weaknesses. I have seen many people.

People come and ask Me, “Vivekananda used to smoke. Vivekananda used to drink. Why not we smoke? Why should we not smoke?”

I tell them, “Vivekananda started smoking after becoming enlightened. You also become enlightened. Then smoke.”

(01:20)

(02:16)

Somebody goes to Ramana Maharshi and asks him, “Master, what should I do for enlightenment?”

Bhagawan says, “Do self enquiry. Enquire who are you.”

After a month he comes back, “It is too difficult, master. Can I do something else? Can I do meditation?”

Bhagwan says, “Alright, do. What can be done?”

After a month, again this guy comes back and says, “Can I do repetition of Mantra or Japa? Meditation is too difficult.”

Bhagawan says, “Alright.”

After a month, again this guy comes back, “Can I do just bhajan instead of Japa? Japa is too difficult.”

Again Bhagawan says, “Alright. What can be done?”

Again after a month, this guy comes back and says, “Can I do Pooja? I think that is the best thing for me.”

Again master says, “Alright.”

(04:43)

(05:45)

(07:11)

Somebody goes to Ramanuja, a great enlightened master who happened in South India. Somebody goes to him and asks, “Master, please teach me how to have the devotion, how to have bhakti.” Ramanuja says, “Have you fallen in love with anybody? Have you experienced a real deep relationship?” This guy is shocked! “What? What are you teaching? I have come to learn bhakti. I am a pure brahmachari. How can you ask me that to go and fall in love with somebody or I have experienced love?”

(07:58)

(09:10)

(10:31)

(13:48)

(14:53)

(16:02)

(17:07)
