"Straight Way Out of Ignorance" - today's topic that will make inner awakening happen in you and transform your muscle-memory and break out the negativities. Continuing to enlighten us into the Sadhana Pada, part II of the Patanjali's Yoga Sutra 85, chapter 2, verse 34 - "Vitarkah Himsadayah Krta Karita Anumoditah Lobha Krodha Moha Purvakah Mrdu Madhya Adhimatrah Dukha Ajnana Anantaphalah iti Pratipaksa bhavanam", Paramhamsa Nithyananda, living avatar, dealt with one of the longest sutra's. Almost 21 lines, then understand the importance Patanjali is giving to this technique. "The obstructions to Yoga are killing etc ., whether committed, caused or approved; either through avarice, or anger, or ignorance; whether slight, middling or great, and the result is infinite ignorance and miseries. This is the method of thinking the contrary."
Yesterday, Swamiji gave the technique on how to create contrary thoughts and establish yourself in the highest coherence, Yama, and niyama. Today, He is giving us an example so we don't misunderstand and miss the sutra as we need confidence over our understanding.
The greatness of our tradition is its freedom in thinking, understanding and raising understanding to its next level. For example, Swami Vivekananda's own disciple's disciple has the courage to give a different translation to this sutra.
Remembering His childhood master, Raghupati Yogi, a great yogi from Patanjali's lineage, Nithyananda shared that this whole sutra was taught to Him by Raghupati Yogi as "When a thought comes in you, without allowing a feeling that has to be executed, when you alter the thought, it is called Pratipaksha Bhavanam"
Expanding on the sutra, Swamiji clarified about our actions and the importance of attending to our muscle memory, "This is the one process which you can practice the whole day and only this can change your muscle memory. If you practice unclutching your mind will be transformed. With yoga, your body will be transformed. Your muscle memory is responsible for making decisions and without even a gap of micro-millisecond completing the action spontaneously before even you understand it! You do not act because of your habit, your training or your engraved memories. NO. There is no specific reason why you act the way you act."
A master of Patanjali's level coming down and teaching us the applied way means this one process is so powerful, it can transform your being. Swamiji then gave a click on sufferings, "If you transform your intellect and emotions and not muscle memory, you will still suffer. Because muscle memory is responsible for your actions, when we transform the muscle memory, every thought comes out only with a clear-censored system. Every idea by the time it becomes alive, the awareness and consciousness have cast their energy and knowledge on that thought. Even a few thoughts allowed without awareness can cause so much misery and suffering!"
He spelled out the secret of the goal and the scale to make disciples understand. The goal and the scale is - being in 'restful awareness'. Again and again, Swamiji warned spiritual seekers that timing is very important to create contrary thoughts to negative thoughts. "Whenever negativity raises in you, don't give up, don't go with it. Again and again stand up till your muscle memory feels confidence."
Swamiji beautifully shared a practice from His youth days that raised His awareness. He used to have a notebook called "My Book" where He wrote down all the spiritual truths He heard and learnt. He always carried it as an extension of His heart and brain. All the teachings from Arunagiri Yogeshwara and His 'pratipaksha bhaavana' are written down in that book.
Giving importance to timing to respond to negative thoughts, he quoted Ramana Maharishi's words -- "Oh Lord, when my 5 senses entered my house to rob me and rape me, where were you, were you not in my inner space."
Nithyananda concluded the satsang with a powerful message and His blessings, "The moment negativity enters your inner space to rob you, put the brake. Stop it. Immediately bring the security. Have the inner awakening and immediately create the right understanding and right truth and get yourself back to the center so that you can be out of that negativity"

Friday, December 17, 2010 Prayer, Welcome. Today’s subject for morning satsang is Straight way out of ignorance! Straight way to be out of ignorance. In this sutra patanjali gives one of the powerful method technique to be out of ignorance. To establish yourself in Iyama and Niyama. To raise yourself to the highest coherence. You will be surprised today’s sutra is the longest sutra in the whole patanjali yoga sutras. He does not utter more than 5 or 6 words. Sometime there is only 2 word even one sutra there is 1 word. Here, he gives a full long 2 lines. I can say almost 21 words! Then understand the importance he is giving for this technique. 85th sutra overall, chapter 2 – 34th verse. The sutra is - Vitarkaha himsaha abhayaaha krita kaarita anumodita lobha, krodha, moha, poorvaka, mrudu Madhya adhimaatraha dukkha ajnanan ananta phala iti pratipaksha bhaavanam! Swami Vivekananda – The obstructions to yoga are killing, falsehood and so forth whether committed cause or appoved either to ….they result in infinite ignorance and misery. This is the method of thinking Prabhavananda – the obstacles to yoga such as acts of violence or untruth maybe Greed anger or self interest. They may be small, moderate or …and never cease … Satchitananda – when negative thoughts are acts such as violence ….whether incited by greed, anger or infactuation. Whether ….reflecting thus is also pratipaksha bhaavanam. Each translation is actually completely from different angle. Swami Vivekananda translates this sutra in a certain way, swami prabhavananda who is disciple of disciple of Swami Vivekananda gives it differently and has the courage of publishing it. This is the greatness of our tradition. Everyone has the freedom to translate their own way. His translation is also accepted by the same order publication which publishes both books. That is the greatness of our tradition, freedome of thinking, understaning and freedom to raise the understanding to next level. I will explain Vitarkaha himsaha abhayaaha krita kaarita anumodita lobha, krodha, moha, poorvaka, mrudu madhyaadhi maatra dukkha jnana ananta phala iti pratipaksha bhaavanam! Now I can remember the whole slide as it is – how Raghupati yogi taught me this whole sutra in the Arunachala temple in the Krittika mandapam – he was sitting on a wooden plank and I was sitting on 4-5 pillows. The air which leaves your system through any part other than your nostril holes it is called apaana. He had one old book in which Sanskrit sutra and tamil translation will be there. He read out the sutra. I asked what does it mean. Let me exactly tell you in tamil and then I will translate – (quotes the explanation in tamil)when a thought comes in your without allowing a feeling that it has to be executed, when you alter the thought it is called pratipaksha bhavanam. This is the one process which you can practice the whole day. This process only can change your muscle memory. If you practice unclutching your mind will be transformed. With yoga your body will be transformed. This is the only technique which will transform your muscle memory – your muscle memory is responsible for making decisions and without even a gap of micro milli second completing the action spontaneously before even you understand it! As I was telling the other day you do not act because of your habit, your training or your engraved memories. NO. there is no specific reason why you act the way you act. See the funny thing. it is very funny and very difficult to understand. Grasping is such a difficult thing. so unless you understand the source of this, it is practically impossible for you to alter. Muscle memory is responsible for making the decision and executing it within micro milli second even before you become aware! Such a dangerous thing you see. So the muscle memory need to be attended. I need to expand on this technique more & more in a detailed way. Today I will give you the simple m eaning. And then I will explain how to apply this sutra in every situation. For example violence is anti yoga, against yoga. When you have the thought of violence how to bring the pratipaksha bhaavanam- get yourself to the anti –violence and get rooted into you. Muscle memory transformation means every thought comes out only with a clear sensored system. Every idea by the time it becomes alive the awareness and consciousness has casted their energy, shining and knowledge on that thought! Even a few thoughts allowed without awareness can cause so much misery and suffering! I have seen people suffering because they allowed just simple one or two thoughts without this filtering system. Today grasp this basic meaning. Whenever the negative thoughts which are against the yoga, the purpose of your life happen in you, analyze, understand take that thought to its logical conclusion and create the opposite understanding means the right understanding aligned with the purpose of your life and raise the coherence to its highest coherence. Having confidence over your understanding and executing that understanding very strongly. The word confidence means courage to live and execute the truths you intellectually grasp! Story – One boy goes to father and asks dad what is the diff between confidence and confidential. Dad says – you are my son and I am confident of that. Your friend timmy is also my son and that is confidential! ☺ Sometime you need to time the stories properly, time the jokes properly ☺ so understanding about confidence – the courage to live the truth and execute it in your body language. Patanjali puts a very beautiful example in the right place because we all suffer with this one suffering unable to get back to the highest ideal in practical life. No short cut. This is the only way. Again & again creating the pratipaksha bhaavana means contrary thoughts to negativity and bringing yourself back to your centre. It is such a diff job, people feel lazy. That is why I use love or fake or so called hatred to push them to get back to their center. Because inability to create pratipaksha bhaavana will allow negativity to grow in you. once negativity grasps you, over, your life is in hell. You are done. Even if it is fake, the restful awareness, peace and joy is good. The experience will be so strong that the fake ideas will also dissolve into it. So undersand, the goal and the scale should be restful awareness. Patanjali puts the right truth in the right sutra in the right place. Just now he taught us on iyama and niyama – the highest coherence in life and giving now the applied technique – when you have violence what to do. He is giving an example means it is something very important. Timing is very important. And making disciples understand, very important. Please understand, it is a very important process for all spiritual seekers in life – creating contrary thoughts to negative thoughts. Whenever negativity raises in you, don’t give up, don’t go with it. Again & again stand up till your muscle memory feels confidence. This is the one process which has raised my awareness in my young age. I had a notebook whatever I heard or learn all spiritual truths I will write down. And whenever I have confusion over anything, I will read that. I used to call that as my book. I will always carry it with me. it is like extension of my heart and brain. There are so many contents in this book which I got from Arunagiri yogeshwar in my book. All my pratipaksha bhaavana are written down in that book. I will always refer to it. It is almost like my guide. I will continuously remember them, get back to my inner space and establish myself into yoga. Even if you miss creating right thought for wrong though A man was in the restaurant and suddenly realized he has gas problem in the stomach. He needed to release the gas. The music was really loud and so thought nobody will know. He timed his gas with the music. After some time he felt better. He finished his coffee. Everyone was looking at him. Then suddenly he realized and remembered that he was listening to his ipod! Time it properly with understanding. Don’t time it based on your ipod. Timing is very important. Ramana maharshi says very beautifully – oh lord, when my 5 senses entered my house to rob me and rape me, where were you, were you not in my inner space. So when negativity enters your inner space to rob you, immd bring the security – the right understanding and right truth and get yourself back to your centre. Timing is important. Timing immd responding to your negativity! I have a police story for you – A man went to police station demanding to speak to the burglar who broke his house previous day. The police said you can find in the court. The man said I want to know how he got into the house without waking up my wife. I have been trying to do the same for years! Catch the thief in the right moment. Catch the negativity the moment he enters into your house. Don’t wait to go to the police station. The moment negativity enters you put the brake. Stop it. Have the inner awakening and immediately create the right understanding so that you can be out of that negativity. I will expand on this sutra everyday till it is completely understood for different situations. Because this is one sutra I practiced more number of times in my life. More than unclutching. I tried it twice and I got it. But this made my whole bio memory pure and radiating. Blessings!
