The Cosmos is talking to You
DATE: Day 17: Sep 7th 2011
Understand Gita is not just for the people who worship Krishna or who worship Shiva or who worship Arjuna or who worship Jesus or who worship Mohammed or who worship Buddha, or who worship only Mahavira. Gita is spoken by the cosmos through Krishna. So it is universal. Nobody can claim… it is given by the Universe to the human society; to the whole civilization. It is not personal property of anybody; not even the personal property of Hindus. Once it is delivered it is to the whole world.
That is why Vyasa is using the word Bhagavan. Krishna says, Bhagavan says, ‘how have you obtained this depression of mind which is dangerous, not worthy of being propitiated by a man of noble birth’. Please understand Bhagavan says not worthy of being propitiated, not worthy of being supported, encouraged by a man of noble birth. Please understand there are some qualities just because of your birth you should not entertain them, support them, encourage them; that which is not divine and that which will not lead to expansion.
Please understand Bhagavan is saying, he is starting with word ‘Oh pure one, Arjuna’. Please understand here Arjuna is in confusion, is in the level of the ordinary soul, but Bhagavan is the cosmos, the cosmic soul. When he addresses Arjuna he always raises Arjuna to his level. But when Arjuna is addressing the Bhagavan he is always bringing him down to his level. He is saying Vasudeva, Govinda, Janardhana, Madhusudana. When Arjuna looks at Krishna he looks at Krishna as his level. He is reducing him to an ordinary soul.
See all these words, names like a Madhava, Madhusudana, Keshava; all these words are connected to one incident. Madhusudana means oh destroyer of Madhu, demon Madhu. So Arjuna is trying to bring Krishna to his level. Krishna is trying to bring Arjuna to his level. It’s a eternal war still going on. It goes on and on and on and on and on. That is why when Bhagavan is addressing, he is saying ‘Oh pure one, oh pure one how have you obtained this depression of mind which is dangerous’.
I can say the whole Bhagavad Gita message is delivered in this one sutra. He is not talking at all about the war. He is saying, ‘how did you obtain?’ Please understand he is starting with the word ‘Oh pure one’ means he is saying you are pure by nature, you are unclutched by nature. How have you obtained, how did this depression of mind which is dangerous; he is using the first word – dangerous, has come on you; not worthy of being propitiated by a man of noble birth. By your very birth you can’t support this depression; that which is not divine. It is not divine and that which will not lead to expansion.
Understand life is for expansion. All the spiritual truths should go on expanding you, expanding you, expanding you. It is for expansion not for contraction. Life is for expansion. How have you obtained this depression of mind which is dangerous, not worthy of being propitiated by a man of noble birth; that which is not divine and that which will not lead to expansion.
I can say the essence of the whole Bhagavad Gita is over with this one sutra. Each word is filled with so much of meaning. Each word has so much of reason. He says ‘Oh pure one’. The moment he starts, uses the word ‘Arjuna, oh pure one’ please understand Krishna is also using so many names for Arjuna in Gita. Arjuna is using so many names for Krishna in Gita but Vyasa is using only one name that is Bhagavan; that’s it. Whenever he is addressing, whenever Vyasa is addressing, he is using only one word Bhagavan.
