Night photo of a deepam lighting at an outdoor temple setting. A bare-chested man with long swept-back dark hair and an orange-saffron cloth draped over his shoulder reaches toward a tall bundle of dry and green sugarcane stalks, one end of which is alight with a small flame. Behind him, a man in white dhoti with a red forehead mark and gold bracelet, a woman in white with a red border, and others in white and red clothing stand in the dark. A red and gold striped cloth hangs at the right edge of the frame. Overhead are metal lamp frames and a pillar.

Behind them a crowd of people, many women in white and cream saris with red borders, stands in a line. On the right, a tall bundle of sugarcane stalks and feathery grass is set on a white cloth, draped with a red and gold striped cloth. A large bonfire of dried reeds and sticks burns at left, flames rising. Behind it, a line of people in white dhotis and shawls stands, some with palms joined. In the centre, a seated figure in orange robes sits on an ornate gold-trimmed chair or palanquin seat. A tall saffron-robed sannyasi with a shaved head stands at right with hands folded, beside women in white saris with yellow borders and orange saris. Ornate umbrellas and a decorated canopy stand at upper right under lamplight. The scene suggests a Kartheekai Deepam fire ceremony; the seated figure's identity is not established from appearance.2010-11-21A night-time outdoor cremation scene at Tiruvannamalai. A tall flame rises from a pyre of straw and flowers at right, while a woman in a red-orange sari and a man in white dhoti hold a long torch toward it. Behind him, several people in white dhotis and shawls stand in the dark, one in a white and green cloth holding a red garland. The scene looks like a lamp-lighting or fire ritual at a temple. The man has a distinctive hairstyle and saffron wrap, but his appearance is not sufficient to confirm an identity, so he is described by role as the man lighting the fire.2010-11-21Night-time photo of a large bonfire of dried palm fronds and straw blazing at left, with flames and sparks rising. Beside it, a line of about eight men in saffron-orange robes stands on bare sandy ground, several with orange shawls, rudraksha malas and bead necklaces; one at centre wears a tall crown-like headdress.
