As per Vedic Astrology, there are nine planets that influence our lives. The position of the planets at the time of human birth have influence on our actions & reactions to different situations in life.

Etymology

'Nava’ means nine. ’Graha’ means planets.

Scriptural References

“The moment the consciousness enters your body, the energy level of the cosmos at the exact time of your birth gets recorded in your consciousness. At this precise time your inner space is embedded with a ‘printout’ of this cosmic energy level as well as of the position of the nine major energy centres of the solar system. - HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda Paramashivam

“The astrological planets are not just astronomical, they are energies – a particular energy of push and pull exists between them. The specific energy positions clearly decide the cosmic energy level during the time of birth.” - HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda Paramashivam

Introduction

You might have noticed that as the Moon grows (Purinma) in first half of the month, the waves in the Ocean rises and their aggression will subsides as we approach no moon day (Amavasya).

If planetary occurrences affect the earth and nature and plant life, why then would it not also affect human life?

Navagraha Doshas

The improper planetary alignment for an individual is called “dosha” or negative influence. Due to these “Navagraha doshas” people fall into negative situations.

Navagrahas & our Cognitions

Each Graha represents a component of our cognition and karma in our inner world. It holds a particular resonance in you as a power of your being.

Surya (the Sun) stands as the radiance of the Self which is pure creativity as per its own intrinsic nature, it manifests your world.

Chandra (the Moon) being the fastest moving entity in the sky, represents the fastest element in the body which is the mind.

Buddha (Mercury) stands for viveka (discrimination) and intellect.

Guru (Jupiter) is the principle of wisdom and knowledge.

Shukra (Venus) is love and creativity.

Mangal (Mars) is action.

Shani (Saturn) is responsibility.

Sade Sani

Sade Sati (7½ years) is often termed as one of the most dreaded planetary transits afflicting human beings. However, it is not to be dreaded when approached with the antidote of spiritual wisdom.

When Saturn (Shani) transits through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd house from your natal Moon (position of the Moon in the birth chart), the yoga (alignment) is called Sade Sati. In Hindi, Sade means ‘half’ and Sati means ‘seven’. Saturn takes 2½ years to pass through each sign; its passing through 3 signs takes 7½ years, hence the name Sade Sati.

Just as the energy of the Sun’s principle can burn impurities in the person’s chart, Jupiter’s energy can empower through generosity and enriching, while Mercury motivates the person to listen instead of talking, Mars leads to action, Venus inspires to accept the beauty in others with love and Moon creates the feeling of being part of the same family, Saturn teaches the person how to become realistic and thrive in solitude without feeling fearful and depressed. It teaches to face one’s fears and limitations in order to walk the talk and spiritualize one’s life.

Sade Sati is all about facing yourself with maturity and taking up the responsibility for your transformation. To the person undergoing it, this period will appear as if Kaal (time) itself is on hold. Actually this space is necessary to understand your emotions, and your responsibility towards what you create in your world because of them. By doing so, you iron out and destroy your karmas of this life and redefine your existence.

Sharing Guru’s gentle energy through enriching is the ultimate remedy during this period, bringing expansion where Saturn tends to shrink one’s consciousness. Sharing knowledge, blessing others and seeing the good in them even in times of disputes, dissatisfaction, depression, differences, disharmony or failures are the qualities of the dignified Saturn energy.

The painful effect of Sade Sati, which is known to many, happens only when you are not ready to admit your complete responsibility for what is. The negative side of Saturn then manifests as a current of resistance to the present moment. Saturn then becomes “malefic”, as astrologers say. The highest frequency of Saturn embodied in this yoga, manifests when you decide to face yourself and complete with your patterns. Completion with yourself gives the courage to handle whatever life brings with integrity and authenticity.

In a way, Saturn’s principle represents how you relate to Kaal (time). Since it intensifies any experience, it makes one’s consciousness experience it deeply in order to gain maturity. It also sends karmic retribution and points out which aspects of life you have to focus on and clear up in order to grow. The condition of Saturn in a chart shows how permanent and synchronized a person’s connection with their consciousness and awareness is, even during the most challenging times. A well-placed Saturn shows that the person knows when to go slow, when to go fast, when to work, when to surrender, when to have endurance and how to be stable in the most difficult and tricky circumstances.

A challenging placement of Saturn will allow the person to fall into the darkness of ignorance when life hits; no light seems to reach such a person. Saturn becomes the shadow of the Sun and the person refuses any help and behaves in an unwise and foolish way, binding himself in chains of suffering. Saturn then becomes a tamasic force (causing ignorance) on the consciousness of that person. Without grace, proper understanding and techniques, one may lose faith in the ever-auspicious nature of existence. With the practice of the four tattvas, one can go beyond even the ill-effects of Saturn’s weak placement and reach one’s eternally blissful natural state.

Rahu and Ketu

Rahu & Ketu are Shadow planets. They bring confusion in the life, and lead the mind to chaos.

They are represented as a snake. (Kundalini)

Rahu is represented with a head without body. He has greed. He always needs fulfillment, and he runs behind worldly things, but never get satisfied. Ketu, on the other hand, is represented with a tail without head. He has spiritual understanding, but no context. He feels I know everything.

Rahu

According to the puranas, during the samudra manthan (churning of the Milky ocean), Rahu became overwhelmed with the desire for amrit (divine nectar) owned by the gods. He somehow wanted to possess the amrit through inauthentic ways. He stood in the line of the gods, got the nectar and drank it. The Sun and Moon gods realized it and alerted Mohini (the female avatar of Vishnu) about the same. Before the nectar could pass his throat, Mohini cut off his head. The severed head however, remained immortal due to the effect of the amrit and became known as Rahu, whereas its body and tail became Ketu.

This story has a deeper significance. Rahu represents the ego which desires immortality without the transformation. It holds the mind in a strong grip and throws the individual consciousness into suffering. The mind holds on to a pattern-based logic, perceiving it as being the ultimate truth and treading the path of destruction.

Rahu represents one’s root pattern which creates a cause and effect reaction (karma), which is not ready to complete itself and die – but is ever ready to create chaos and contradictions, ultimately causing one to leave the Master believing it as a fair decision! It can swallow spiritual knowledge and destroy the consciousness to prove that the Master is wrong. Rahu stands for inauthenticity, lack of integrity, destruction, anger, arrogance, greed, violence and chaos as well as morbid emotions, illegality, obsession, crimes and addictions.

Swamiji explains, ‘When your inauthenticity overwhelms you, when you give in to your inauthenticity, it causes irreparable damage to you. When Rahu wins, it takes almost 12 years for you to break the pattern. If you have the will to break the pattern, the pattern breaks.”

Rahu also stands for what one could not achieve in his or her past life. It stands for a strong desire and attachment to things for which one took this birth and which eventually become an obsession in this birth. Rahu tells you that you conquered most of things in your past life, but whatever you didn’t conquer, you need to conquer that in this life! It tells you that you want to conquer that particular thing in this life and you won’t be satisfied until you get it. To understand where Rahu functions, Jyotishis (astrologers) usually look into your horoscope and observe the bhava (the houses of your birth chart) where it sits and which other grahas (planets) it aspects. Its location in bhavas will influence a particular area of your life, like your perception of yourself, your speech, money, family, creativity, health, relationships, sexuality, fear of death, career, or even your perception of enlightenment!

Rahu will strive for the objects of its desires and accumulate them with a lack of discernment, taking the person through the ups and downs of greedy attachments and painful renunciations. Rahu declares: “Oh Existence, I want to be one with you, but before being one with you, I also want this and this from you… give it to me first, only then I’ll accept to be one with you and to flow in gratitude.” Rahu is discontentment incarnate.

Understanding one’s root pattern (root patterns are root thought trends people have, that makes them cognize life events and people a certain way) is the first step towards aligning Rahu’s energy. It can be completely tamed through svapoornatva (completion process for completing with yourself) and poornatva (completion process practiced with others) techniques, surrendering to the Master and following the Guru (Jupiter’s principle) in outer life. Guru tells us to live with integrity, authenticity, responsibility, enrich one’s own self and others, not to give up on oneself and others and to practice meditation and yoga and be in satsang (Being with the higher truths).

Nithyananda has given many special meditation techniques and initiations that reveal your root patterns, transform it and heal Rahu’s energy for you to gain control over your life. These techniques are made available, shared and bolted in your inner space through the incomparable Inner Awakening program, recommended to all persons undergoing Rahu dashas (Rahu transits) as well as people wanting to gain mastery over their unruly mind, emotions, lack of clarity, obsessions, failures settings, depression, addictions to become masters of themselves!

All beings are called as beings, because they have a “being”, understand? There is some oneness between you and the beings you have greed, and the beings with whom you have fear. Whether it is Shani who is trying to attack you, catch you, “Saadey Saathi”, or the Guru who is trying to protect you. Guru is the only graha (planet) in Navagrahas (the nine planets), never gives any bad results. Wherever he is, he will always be protecting! He will always be protecting! Neither directly nor indirectly he will be harming. Shukra, by giving the pleasures and wealth, he can create indirect harm. He will shower you so much, you will lose your sense, and fall prey to Rahu! I will tell you, what is Rahu you know? When you are doing your actions, you know you are inauthentic and hypocritical. Knowing that, you skip, you jump the gun. That is exactly Rahu! Because, he knows he should not be standing in the line of gods and receiving the nectar; he should only be standing in the line of demons. But he jumps the line and stands, quickly grabs the nectar and swallows it. Swifter than Vishnu, understand! The person who is serving there is “Mohini” – Maha Vishnu himself! Swifter than Maha Vishnu! Grabs! Your “buddhi” (intellect) which protects your life is Maha Vishnu. So, this hypocrisy can take over you sometimes, giving all justifications swiftly, and make you jump the gun, or jump the line. That is Rahu! - HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda Paramashivam
