Path of Meditation || Part 1 || (California)

Description:

In this video Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism Jagatguru Mahasannidhanam His Divine Holiness Bhagavan Sri Nithyananda Paramashivam Explains the various States of #Mind and how our Mind works.

Swamiji Explains Powerful truths about Four states of #consciousness, that human beings experience regularly are waking state, dream state, deep sleep state, and the fourth state, Turiya, the state of enlightened beings.

He went on to explain about Aparoksha jnana, the #Knowledge which is gathered, and Aparoksha jnana the knowledge which is Experienced.

Spirituality does not have any faith; it is rooted in Cosmic Truth.

Also Described the Details of Iyama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, samadhi Patanjali is an unabridged dictionary of world philosophy. Iyama: has five branches, ahimsa Non-violence, Astheya, non-stealing, Sathya, truthfulness, aparigraha, living with less, and brahmacharya, living like a God on planet earth, which includes celibacy.

While Expressing the Quality of the Mind, Swamiji simply explains that ‘’Mind and energy is like a mother in law and daughter in law, if you try to make them silent, they will fight more. They both are possessed by each other in the same way your mind is possessed by the consciousness’’

You can say yes to only one person, not to two-people.In the same way, if you say yes to the mind you will say no to meditation. When you get solidified, you get integrated, when you let go of your mind, it goes it's own way.

Only when you live Sathya, truthfulness, in mind, word, and deed, is it authentic.

The Whole perspective of science towards the east and spirituality, is the last word of science, ‘’everything that exists is energy’’. Where science ends spirituality starts.

When you live your life according to others’ choices or opinions you make your whole life a lie, and do not live the life you took birth for. At End, he also Explains about Varnashrama Dharma - The Ancient Varana System, which was Beautifully holding the Structure of the Society in its Authenticity. And in course time it got diluted by an Anti-HIndu Elements.

[00:15]

He heard a sound of young lady getting down from the Rolls royce. She asked, “Are you hungry? Are you depressed? Come I will take you to my home today and take care of you.” She took him, took him to the house. When she entered the house butler opened the doors of the car and she ordered the servant to take care of him, to give him the food, hot water bath and all the comfortable arrangements to stay. He had everything. Suddenly in the midnight he saw the young lady is walking into his room enquiring how was the food? Nice. How was the stay? Perfectly alright. Then why are you not sleeping? The man didn’t reply. She asked, “Oh you want company? Just move over.” The man was overjoyed and moved over and rolled in the Thames river. If you look the story little bit, many of you’ve missed. He was dreaming all the way. All the way he was dreaming the whole scenes. Just as you missed this story, you missed many things in your life. Because most of you were dreaming.

[02:25]

Psychologists, modern day psychologists they say, hundred percent, hundred things, if hundred things happen around us, your mind captures only two percent. Your mind grasps only two percent. In most of our life, in most of the time we almost spend our life in somnambulism. Sleeping half asleep. Something is thought and something is done. Now if you would have listened with little care, attention you would have got that story. Hardly I could see only twenty percent caught the story. Just twenty percent could catch the story. If you missed even one line, you will miss the whole story.

In our life we miss so many things just by dreaming. The man who was dreaming, who was continuously dreaming has missed his whole life. Just see, out of over joy he rolled over, rolled into the Thames. The same thing we are doing; we connect the unconscious and the super conscious and the conscious.

[03:51]

You have three layers of your existence. One is conscious - the layer in which you are living. It is called jagrat. The second one is swapna. Of course the swapna state has no equal word in english. We may call it as subconscious. But swapna state has no equivalent word. There are many sanskrit words which has no equivalent word. The word dream does not mean swapna. Please understand. Swapna means don’t think the word dream. The dream means whatever you dream in the night is called dream. But the swapna means not only the night dreams, even the day dreams. So the word swapna means something more than dream. You understand it just with a sanskrit meaning. That’s enough. The first thing is onscious the body with which you are living. Second thing is swapna the mental body, your imaginary body with which you create imaginations. The third thing is super consciousness. They say beyond the sharira. Actually all the three are not exactly clear in our system, in our being. It overlaps on each other. That is why you get many time confused between the dreams and the reality. You get many times confused. In the dreams you do not feel where you are, or where you, what you are doing. Your ‘I’, your consciousness is lost. The sameway in the wakeful state also many times, most of the time you’re just taken. You don’t lead.

[05:56]

As I was telling you yesterday, the conscious living, most of the time we are just taken. We are flying, flying, flying. The man who decides to live his life consciously starts walking the path of meditation. Even in the spirituality we have thousands of illusions. If you read continuously, after some time you get the feeling that you know everything. For a long time if you read, after some time you get the feeling that we know things. That’s the greatest danger a man can have; greatest danger a man can have. There are two words in Sanskrit: one is called the paroksha jnana; another one is aparoksha jnana. Paroksha jnana means, the jnana, the knowledge acquired from the books and from listening from others, the great Masters or the teachers, Gurus and the acharyas, by reading the scriptures and the sutras. That is called paroksha jnana. Aparoksha jnana means the thing which has become your experience; something which has become your solid life. That is aparoksha jnana.

[07:31]

Ramakrishna says beautifully paroksha jnana is something like a knowing about the milk. Aparoksha jnana is drinking the milk. There is a vast difference; not only difference, diametrically opposite. Sometimes the paroksha jnana and aparoksha jnana are diametrically opposite. But by continuously reading and the listening we start entering into the imagination, we start thinking that we know or we achieved. Patanjali is the first Master and the last Master who lived on this planet earth who made the whole spirituality as a science. Till Patanjali and after Patanjali there was no one who made the whole spirituality as a science. For a long time the enlightenment was thought as an accident. It can happen to anybody at any moment. It may happen to anybody at any moment. You cannot do anything for the enlightenment to happen. You cannot do anything in that line. That is what... that was the concept. Till the time of Patnjali. Patanjali is the first Master, I can say, first scientist who made the spirituality in a clear path. Patanjali is the first man who made the navigator. Patanjali is the first man who made the navigator. When we came in that car it was so accurate, so perfect, exactly it guides, that navigation system …front.

[09:34]

But the navigator how much it helps and it guides, just like that in the spiritual world the first and the last navigator ever done in the spiritual consciousness is Patanjali’s yoga sutras. It is a simple navigator. Nothing more need to be told about the yoga sutras. The man who is totally logical in the field of illogical. Spirituality is always considered as a field where bhakti and the illogical counts. The devotion does not know, heart does not know anything of logic. People go and ask Meera, “How you have such a ecstatic love for Krishna? What is happening to you when you chant the Krishna’s name”? When she chants the Krishan’s name she is just ecstatic. She is already in the ecstasy, dancing, whirling, just spinning around. People ask her, “What is happening to you”? She says, “I do not know. I feel the love, ecstasy only that much I know. I do not know what happens.” Ramakrishna was asked, “How do you feel so much of love and the deep attachment to the Krishna… to the Kali”? He says again, “I do not know.”

[11:14]

These are the great people who have become enlightened, who achieved god but they could not make navigation or navigating system. They achieved no doubt. They are embodiment of god but they could not make a navigation system. Patanjali is the first, foremost, at least from My experience - last man who made the navigation system in the spiritual world. If you take which turn, where you will meet what, what experience will be waiting, and how to deal with that experience and where you need to take the left turn, where you need to take the right turn, where you need to just wait silently or where you need to take the aggressive steps, everything inch by inch, almost inch by inch. Patanjali has tried hard and become successful to replace a living Master by a book. I can say he is successful by creating yoga sutras. The great book ever written on the spiritual field. This is the book of books. From this all the books of the world originated.

[12:49]

People may say, “Why Swamiji?4 Gita is here” Of course Gita is here, no doubt. But there are few things to be understood. Gita speaks on the goal and on the path. Yoga speaks even the dangers of the path. You see, Gita is useful in American roads. If you know the goal and the path it is enough. Nothing more is necessary you are sure that there will be no pitfalls in the road. If there are, you can sue naturally. You have all the security systems. You see, Gita is useful in the American roads where there will be no pitfalls, no changes, no alterations. But the roads like Indian roads, the places like India, any day roads may change, any day any rain can destroy the whole road. A simple flood can change the whole route. Patanjali’s yoga sutra, the sutras of Patanjali is for the mind, for the person who can create who can face all sorts of pitfalls. Gita says about the path and the goal. Yoga sutra says path and the goal and the pitfalls which you can face, which you may face.

[14:28]

Every siddhis, about every miracle powers Gita speaks… the yoga speaks. Patanjali speaks on every miracle power by which you get what power, what will be the effect, what will be the side effect, what will be the after effect, how to go beyond. The navigator, a spiritual navigator, a total spiritual navigator is yoga sutra, the first scientist who is so logical. Today in the modern world there are thousands of great Masters, enlightened people who teach religion in the language of science. Today the whole world, wherever you go, any country it may be, if it is spirituality you will see only the Indian Gurus, Indian Masters. It is not that other religions have not produced the Master. There are many Masters and half of the humanity is christians and more than twenty percent is Islams - muslims, ten percent are buddhists. But go throughout the world, if you see spiritual seekers always turn only towards the Indian Masters. Indian Masters are the people who are ruling the world. India is the country which gives jagat Gurus.

[16:16]

Somebody was telling Me, “Swamiji why the India is degraded so much? But still somehow it is surviving.” I was giving the reply, “As long as it produces jagat Gurus and supplies to the world it will never die, it can never die. India is alive just because it is producing jagat Gurus and giving to the world. Any amount of revolution, any amount of evolution, any change let it take place, any change let it happen, either Russia is communist country or a democratic country or a capitalist country we don’t bother. But if you see the spiritual seekers they will be turning towards the India. You can always find a group of people chanting hare Rama, hare Krishna or Shiva Rama. The Indian Masters have invaded, I can say the word ‘invaded’ around the world. India is the country most invaded. India is invaded last three thousand years more than three hundred groups have invaded India according to history. In last three thousand years three hundred groups have invaded India.

[17:43]

India is the most invaded country and never went out to invade other countries. You can’t find a single incident that Indian kings have went outside the boundary to invade other countries. No. India is the most invaded country and never went out to invade others. But here today in the modern world you see simply the whole world is getting invaded by the Indian Masters. You can see the list.. you can see a big... I think only a ten percent is here. I can say only ten percent are here. Ten percent is here. They are just flooded; world is just flooded by the Indian Masters and Indian Gurus and the Swamis. And they challenge the scientists. They just challenge the scientists. They just challenge the educated people, the great intellectuals, the great scientists; just everybody is challenged face to face. There was a time when Vivekanada landed in America, that was the time people used to feel shy to claim themself as Indians. Vivekananda himself has to use a different color robe. Vivekananda himself, there is no other way, he has to use different color robe. Of course just a few months ago in American embassy one Swami went to have a visa. Somebody said, “Swami, if you change the color of the dress, they may give visa.” Then Swami said, “Let me get a one week visa. I will change the clothes of their people. I will change their people’s cloth.” And he did, that’s the beauty.

[20:02]

Whole world is just being flooded by the Indian Gurus, the Indian Masters. Whole world is just turning towards the Indian spirituality. Of course I am not boasting anything, please don’t misunderstand, don’t mistake. Every society has given something to the world. The American society has given the social freedom, Germany has given the medicines, Egypt has given the political culture, India has given the spirituality. Every culture has given something to the world. Indian Gurus are just flooded around the world. Indian Gurus are facing the scientists ‘how and why?’ How? Because the spirituality is totally an illogical field. Spirituality is always considered as a field of illogical. But all the logicians, the great scientists are just faced, conquered, argued, they just argue in the language of science, in the language of logic, in the language of mathematics. How could spirituality be brought in the language of science? I tell you all Patanjali is the first man and the last man who brought the whole spirituality in the language of science. If today world is being invaded by thousands of spiritual Masters, thousands of Indian Gurus, Patanjali is the first person, Patanjali is the only one and only reason who has given the scientific explanation for the whole spiritual scriptures. Just because of Patanjali, just because of Patanjali the whole world is getting spirituality.

[00:15]

Patanjali is the first man who declared spirituality does not need any faith. Just like chemistry A + B = C, you can do this, do that, you will have the enlightenment. Till the time of Patanjali it was not possible to put the whole thing across the table in the form of facts and figures. Just because of Patanjali, Patanjali is the only reason, the one and only reason who made we, spiritual people to sit and face directly face to face the great scientists. Because the terms of logic, the terms of mathematics, in terms of analysis, in terms of facts and figures we have only one book in the spiritual world. That is Patanjali’s yoga sutras. All the other books they speak about the path and the goal but they never speak about the how and the why. Patanjali is the first man who speaks how and the why.

[01:28]

So, few aphorisms, few sutras from the Patanjali I will try to comment on these three days. This is a series of discourses, three day discourse I will be speaking eight steps to enlightenment. According to Patanjali the great spiritual scientist’s eight step to the enlightenment. The eight steps which he gave I will try to explain, I will try to express My understanding on those eight steps. Of course to show the greatness of the Patanjali I have compared the other societies, the other cultures. Please don’t misunderstand, don’t think anybody is low; but to make you understand I have no other way to show or to express the greatness of the Patanjali. Only when you understand the importance of the man and his mission you will be able to attend, you will be able to listen totally, carefully. Otherwise you will miss just as you missed the first story. As you missed the first story you may miss the whole story.

[02:50]

Patanjali gives eight steps to enlightenment. The essence of Patanjali is called ashtanga yoga - eight steps to enlightenment. The eight steps I will try to explain, eight steps to Patanjali, eight steps to enlightenment as explained by the Patanjali. Let Me just repeat the steps, eight steps then I will try to explain one by one. Yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi. Of course don’t be frightened by the sanskrit words. There is no need for you to remember it, relax. In this eight first three the yama, niyama and asana belongs to the layer of body. All these three are physical. The next pranayama, pratyahara, dharana these three belongs to the layer of mental, psychological. Dhyana, samadhi belongs to the layer of spiritual, consciousness. So, today we will see the first three things belongs to body. Tomorrow we will see the next three things which belongs to the mind. Day after tomorrow we will see the last two things which belongs to being or consciousness; body, mind and the soul.

[04:45]

He gives a beautiful step by step explanation, the way, the path, the solid path. I can say because of Patanjali we can stand with backbone. If only one book, this one book if it has not happened in the eastern tradition, in the eastern mysticism there is nobody, no book, no other Master who can challenge the western scientific thinking directly, western logical thinking directly. Because in the western logic they say, according to the science, according to their system, they say A + B = C whether I do it or you do it or he does it or she does it, A + B is C, it is proved. They question you, they question the spiritual Masters, “Do you have something like this straight? Do you have something like this a clear cut ? Do you have something like this facts and figure”? Except Patanjali nobody says, “Yes”. Patanjali is the first man and the last man who says, “Yes”. A big capital letter YES. He says very clearly step by step where to start, how to walk and where to stop and where to end. The meditation techniques and the methods to start, the methods to walk, methods to end.

[06:30]

A western mind, a logical mind... one more thing you need to understand, don’t think you are all people of east. That’s a big mistake you do. When I say west - people who think logically. You also have become west not because you are in, in America. The day when gurukulam system is destroyed in India, the English education has entered in India, the day western education system has entered in India, the whole east has become west. The whole east has become west. Everybody just questions unless your questions are answered, nobody is ready to do anything. Don’t think only here your kids are questioning. People… people come and tell Me from the America, “Swamiji, my kids are not listening. If I tell them to tell prayers, they say, ‘Why should I say’? They ask all sorts of questions.” Don’t think it is only your problem. In India they have much worse problems. In India also they have this problem.

[07:40]

Whenever a man gets his own logic, his own understanding he rebels. It is usual, it is usual. He just asks, ‘Give me the reason, give me the explanation. Why should I do? What for should I do? What will I get? What will happen to me?’ He starts asking you. He starts questioning you. Patanjali is the first and the last man who gives reply for every question, who gives a logical reason, who takes a man from logic to the place where you cross the logic. Actually I feel totally dissatisfied even after giving so much of introduction about Patanjali. Now what I have given introduction really I feel totally dissatisfied that I have not expressed the glory of Patanjali. Just because of that, which I don’t want to do, I am not able to express the glory of Patanjali. Even this I have to use some hard.. harsh words to express the glory of the eastern thinking system. Anyhow sometime truth is harsh but it has to be understood. If I explain the way in which he worked, the way in which he designed I can say Patanjali is the unabridged dictionary of world philosophies. Any philosophy, the whole world philosophies you can classify in two ways: one is who follows Patanjali and who refuses Patanjali. That's all. But you can’t go beyond Patanjali.

[09:33]

Either you have to accept Patanjali or reject Patanjali but Patanjali will be the center. Patanjali is the center. There is no going beyond Patanjali. He will be the center; either you agree or you disagree. Patanjali is the basic, Patanjali is the base for the whole world’s philosophy; all the miracle powers, all the spiritual energy, all kinds of samadhis, all kinds of spiritual experiences, all kinds of enlightenments, all kinds of techniques. If you light the lamp in the house and sit in front of the lamp even that is a technique, even that is from Patanjali. The origin is from Patanjali. From the first simple thing of lighting a lamp to the level of dropping your consciousness and merging into enlightenment. Anybody who enters the spiritual life, what do you do first? First step is you will learn how to light the lamp in the puja room. From the step of lighting the lamp to the last step dropping your consciousness, dropping your ego and entering into the enlightenment, becoming god; from this step to that step totally Patanjali covers and explains every step.

[11:05]

That’s why I say he is an unabridged dictionary of world philosophies. I will give core of his teachings what he means by his sutras. He has written a beautiful book called - Patanjali yoga sutras. He has written a three great books. One is Vyakarana - the mahabhasya on Panini sutras, another one is on medicine and the third is on yoga philosophy on yoga sutras. Patanjali is considered to be the incarnation of Adisesha, the snake on which Visnu is resting, Vishnu’s bed. One, the small story of how the yoga sutras are created. The Patanjali was staying in Chidambaram. Chidambaram is a place in South India where the big Nataraja temple is there. He stayed in Chidambaram. He used to conduct classes, the meditation courses. He had a beautiful ashram. Whenever he used to speak on these yoga sutras the one tongue will not be sufficient. Actually now I understand why the one tongue is not sufficient. To speak about Patanjali itself I feel so dissatisfied. I feel I have not exactly expressed the glory of Patanjali. To speak about him itself one tongue is not sufficient, then how much he would have felt insufficient to speak his philosophy.

[13:10]

So, he feels that one tongue is not sufficient. So he used to take the Adisesha avatara his original form and he used to speak in thousand tongues and one thousand disciples used to sit and write down whatever he speaks. For each face one disciple will sit and write down. When he takes that form, his energy will not be tolerated, the energy will be too much. So disciples cannot directly sit in front of him. So, they used to put a big curtain in front of him. He will sit behind the curtain and he will speak, disciples will note down. He said to the disciples for no reason you should either pull the curtain or nobody should go out of the hall. Nobody should leave the hall, because you know in front of the Master itself people sleep, doze and do all sorts of things. And if he is not there what will they do? Sometimes they run away or sometimes… anyhow. They doze off or they run away. Patanjali warned. ‘Nobody should leave the hall.’ That’s one thing. Next thing ‘nobody should remove the curtain.’ Because if you remove the curtain, the energy, you cannot bear the energy, all of you will be burnt away.

[14:36]

Anyhow Patanjali has started the class. Everyday it goes on, goes on, goes on in one thousand heads he is giving the discourses and in one thousand disciples…. one thousand disciples are recording. Today the discourse is getting finished, today the whole programme will be over, all the sutras will be recorded. Just on that day out of curiosity one disciple just pulled the curtain. And the energy has flooded all the disciples who were there in front of him, the disciples and the copy works, the palm leaves everything is just burnt. Whole work of Patanjali is just wasted, become dust, become ash. But somehow fortunately or unfortunately one disciple just at that moment he has gone for outing, he has gone for outing. When Patanjali first saw the disciples and in front of his own eyes all of them are getting burnt and everybody has become ash. Then he felt very sorry and he came down, he became normal, he came to his ordinary form, the human form. Then he saw one disciple is slowly coming back from his house.

[16:14]

He felt in a way happy. At least that one man is saved. At least his recordings are alive. That one man’s one recording only what we have as Patanjali yoga sutras. All the nine hundred and ninety nine has disappeared. Don’t think I am telling story. I am not telling story. I am telling you history. I am not telling you the story, I am telling you the history. Because if you see the depth in which he has written, the depth in which he analyzed the human consciousness, you cannot imagine the unimaginable expression and unimaginable experiences he writes.

[00:16]

Somebody asked Me, “Swamiji, why should I chant god's name? Why should I surrender myself to god”? If you don’t chant Rama’s name what you will be doing? You will be chanting your wife’s name. If you don’t surrender to your god you will be surrendering to your mind. Nothing else. What else you will do? People ask Me, “If I surrender everything to god what will happen to my freedom”? But understand you have no such thing as freedom. As on now your ego, your mind is ruling you. Just your mind is ruling you. When you say, “Yes” to God, you say, “No” to mind. Mind and the meditation, mind and the energy they are like mother in laws, daughter in laws. How much you try you cannot make them live together. Just you cannot make. It is a sheer, simple truth. I have seen many times just because she loves something, this person will hate; just because she loves, no other reason. Just because she loves, she will hate. I have seen always, if the mother in law first comes to Me, daughter in law will never come. If daughter in law gets attached with Me mother in law will never come. Because always the other is wrong.

[01:42]

You have a clear cut idea she is wrong. Anything she does you know, you know for sure. You don’t ask the argument and then pass the judgement. You know for sure if she does, it is wrong. And she knows if you do it is wrong. They both don’t go hand in hand. They both don’t stay together. Because both try to possess the same son. The same man is possessed by both. Same person, mother also try to possess, wife also try to possess. Same way your Self, your Being will be possessed by the mind and the consciousness. Meditation and the mind both will try to possess your Being. If you say, “Yes” to someone you have to say, “No” to someone. If you say, “No” to someone you have to say, “Yes” to someone. So, understand you can say yes to only one person not to two person. If you know the technique please teach Me. 😃 Because thousands are asking. If you know the technique to say yes to both please teach Me. You can’t say, “Yes” to both. You need to say “Yes” to only one. You can say only to one.

[03:03]

Somebody asked, they asked one Swami, a great spiritual person, “Swamiji, please teach me the mantra to convert my wife into spirituality.” He said, “If I would have known that mantra why I became Swami.” 😃 So, if you know the mantra to say, “Yes” to both teach Me because so many are asking Me. You can’t say no to… say yes to both the persons. Either if you say yes to daughter in law you have to say no to mother in law. Sameway if you say, “Yes” to the mind you will say, “No” to the meditation. If you say, “Yes” to the meditation no other way you have to say, “No” to the mind. Either you can surrender to Rama or Kama that’s all. There’s a beautiful verse by Tulsi - where Rama is there Kama cannot be; where Kama is there Rama cannot be. Anybody knows the verse, Hindi verse? Tulsi’s beautiful verse in Tulsi Ramayana; before starting the Ramayana they used to chant this. This is the introductory verse of the Tulsi Ramayana.

[04:23]

Where there is Kama there cannot be Rama; where there is Rama there cannot be Kama. So, when you say “No” to your mind you get solidified, you get integrated, you get centered, you get strengthened. when you say, “Yes” to your mind you let go your life in the way as it goes, in the way as it goes. You reach nowhere; you .. simply you reach nowhere. Whenever you say “No” to your mind, your whole energy gets collected, your whole energy gets solidified, your whole energy gets strengthened, your whole Being gets centered. This iyama, iyama means the rules and the regulation or the techniques and methods to say “No” to your mind, to say “No” to your ego, to say “No” to the senses which pulls you down to the earth which does not allow you to fly on the heights of the consciousness.

[05:34]

The first step iyama has got five separate branches. Satyam, brahmacharya, ahimsa, aparigraha, asteya. Satya, let us first go to the satya. It’s a beautiful thing. We understand satya means not telling the lies. Am I right? Satya means, you understand as a truth. That’s is big problem. The satya word don’t have equivalent word is sanskrit in.. in english. Truth does not mean satya. Please understand. ‘Truth’ word is not an equivalent term for satya. Satya has got three dimension. Truth conveys only one dimension of it. Satya means being truthful in word, mouth and deed; in mind, in word and deed. In Tamil there is a beautiful three words; meimai (மெய்ம்மை), vaimai (வாய்மை), unmai (உண்மை). If you understand Tamil you understand these three words. Otherwise I will translate. Meimai (மெய்ம்மை) means the satya practiced in the body, body level, the mei (மெய்). Vaimai (வாய்மை) means the satya practiced in the level of mouth, vaimai not the lipstick. Unmai (உண்மை) means the satya practiced in the level of mind. When you practice the satya in all three levels - manasa, vacha, karmana, he said beautifully; the mind, and the word, and the deed only then it is called truth.

[07:29]

But ordinarily the word truth is understood only as a verbal truth. Verbal truth is only one dimension of truth. It does not mean all the three layers of truth. See, most of us we speak only the truth and we have to speak the truth. Now lie detector machines have come. 😃 Lie detector machines have come. Most of us, we speak only truths. We speak only truth in the verbal way. But please understand we speak truth in words, in thousands of ways we don’t live in the body - we don’t live the truth in the body language. You need to understand. A small story. Albert Einstein the great scientist of last century, the greatest truth discovered in last century is discovered by Einstein. Einstein is the person who turn.. who turned the whole scientists, the whole perspective of the west, whole perspective of the science towards the eastern spirituality. The last word of Einstein is, “Everything exists is energy. Whatever exists is energy.” That is the last word of Einstein. Somebody asked Einstein, “You say whatever exists is energy. How matter becomes energy, energy becomes matter? How can whatever exists become energy?

[09:08]

Einstein says, “Here ends science and starts spirituality.” He says, “This question cannot be answered logically.” Finally, his last books if you read, he speaks more like a Rishi than like a scientist. He has got a... he has done a beautiful work in his last days of life. Only one thing I will quote from him. His last word… still now I think still now the up.. it is not updated, that, his theory, still now people couldn’t update. I do not know whether tomorrow or day after tomorrow they will update it or not, because the speed in which it is going. But till today we were not able to update Einstein. Almost he holds good or he holds the truth. He says whatever exists is energy. That’s the last word as on now from the science. The first word of the first upanishad is Esha vasyam idam sarvam. Whatever exists is energy. The last word of the science and the first word of the Upanishads; the first veda is Rig Veda, the first upanishad is Ishavasya Upanishad, the first statement of the Ishavasya Upanishad is Esha vasyam idam sarvam - whatever exists is energy. The last word of the science and the first word of the upanishads, last word of the science and the first word of the spirituality is one and the same. So, Einstein says where science ends there spirituality starts.

[10:56]

Somebody asked him at the time of death, “ If god gives you one more birth how he want to take birth? What form, what way you want to live”? Everybody was expecting that Einstein will say, “I will become atomic scientist.” Everybody thought he will say that ‘I want to become a atomic scientist’ or I want to become this or that. But he gave a beautiful reply, “If god gives me one more birth I want to become a plumber.” Just a plumber. Nobody could understand. Then he says, “Throughout my life from the young age I had the deep desire to live like a plumber, to live the life of the plumber. In the young age I took up only that job. Somehow by situation I landed up in the hands of scientist. By comparing, comparing and running with them, learning this way and that way, my mind is also brainwashed. Finally I became a great scientist. Today I have all the wealth, popularity, name and fame, power everything science can provide, everything a man can have. I have everything, but I feel that I have missed my life. I feel I missed my life.” He makes one more beautiful statement, “The greatest truth is discovered by me but my life has become a lie.” When… you need to understand this one thing when you don’t live your life, when you don’t live your choice you make your whole life as a lie. You may not tell a lie verbally but in body, in the level of deed, in the level of karma, in the level of action you make your whole life as lie.

[13:09]

Look at the world, everything is just mess. What for we are born we don’t fulfill that life. What for we are grown up we don’t fulfill that life. We just see here, there and just get attracted by the colors of the life. In the ancient India there was a tradition called varnashrama dharma - heavily criticized by these modern psychologists and the great modern social revolutionists. They just criticized the varnashrama dharma. I tell you, we are the only society, the one and only society who survived five thousand years. No society has survived more than three hundred years. In three hundred years all the other social structures have just stumbled down. They’ve broken to pieces. They are no more. But till today a man who created the varnashrama dharma - Manu - he suddenly comes down to the earth and goes in the streets of India, he will never feel he has come to a new place. He will feel “Oh I am in my home.” Still now the culture, the heritage, the social structure is preserved just because of that one idea, the varnashrama dharma. The son learns the profession of the master… profession of the father. The grandson learns from the father. Just by tradition, tradition, tradition the knowledge is imparted.

[14:55]

The only problem in varnashrama dharma happened is the lower and higher consciousness, the inferiority, superiority ego. That’s the only small mistake. But I tell you, if you get a small tumor in the knee you should cut the tumor not the leg itself or you should not kill the person himself. But in the name of social revolution we have given such a strong chemo the person has died. That is what we did in the name of…. you see everywhere criticizing the brahmins and sanyasis is a modern tradition; especially in Tamil Nadu. Criticizing the brahmins and the sanyasis is the modern trend. If you are fashion… if you are not criticizing them you are not updated. You are not fashion enough. The fools does not know, just because of these few handful of sanyasis and the brahmins, they preserved whatever you call in the name of culture. It is they who preserved it. If the Chidambaram brahmins are not there, where is your thevaram and thiruvasakam? Where is your culture? Where is your temples? If few sanyasis are not there, where is your all culture? Not, not only the spiritual culture, the very basic things - your medicines, siddha, ayurveda, your art bharatanatyam, culture, dance, your music, Carnatic, whatever you call, whatever decoration makeup you have on your face to show your face to the world today, these are the only two-three makeups you have. If this is also is not there, even dog won’t care.

[16:59]

If we people are running around today in the world showing our face these are the few things - our dance, our music, our temple culture, our spirituality - these are the few things which we boast. And these few things are preserved just only by these handful of sanyasis and brahmins. We have a great tradition continuously criticizing them. In Tamil movies joker means - this cloth only [Swamiji gestures towards His own cloth]. You can see, Tamil movies joker means either this cloth or that yajnopavita. These two only is the trade mark of joker. Understand it is these few handful of people who preserved the whole culture; who preserved the whole tradition; who kept the whole thing alive. Even today if Manu comes down on this earth, on this India, he will not feel the social structure is disturbed. Because five thousand years the structure has survived, structure is alive. Why? This one concept - ‘satya’ - each one fulfills the hereditary duties. The man who is supposed to become engineer never becomes a doctor. Man who is supposed to become engineer if he becomes doctor what will happen?

[18:31]

A man who is supposed to the business he never enters into the field of spirituality. A man who is supposed to become a worker, he never enters into the field of business. The confusion of changing the attitude never existed. So, as long as you never lived that system the truth prevailed, satya prevailed. That is why they called satya yuga - means, where the varnashrama dharma was alive, when the varnashrama dharma was alive. Today the whole thing is now topsy turvy. The man who is supposed to be a worker, he sits in the seat of preacher. The man who is supposed to be a doctor, he is in the seat of architect. The man who is supposed to be in the seat of architect becomes a lawyer. What will happen? The whole confusion, mess; and not only the social confusion, even individually they feel the dissatisfaction in the life. People don’t feel satisfied.

[19:41]

I tell you, at least from now onwards, give importance to the satya in your body language. Not only in verbal language, verbal language is very easy. You can cheat yourself very easily. Verbal language is only thirty three percent, body language is the major portion of your life. I have seen many people they are totally... they just need meditation, they love meditation, just for the sake of their husband they won’t go to Master, just for the sake of wife he will not go to the Master. Then you make your whole life as a lie. Please don’t compromise anything for others sake. If you compromise you will make your life as a lie. As long as you live your life with a clear understanding, as long as you carry on your life you will see you will be following the satya in your body language. When you live your life for the sake of somebody else for the sake of others you start lying in your whole life. Your whole body language just becomes a lie. Even the fashion, have your own fashion. Why should you imitate somebody else’s fashion? As long as you have your own fashion, you have your own style, you follow satya in your lifestyle. Have satya in everything.

[21:12]

In Zen, in Zen Buddhism when they bring a cup, tea cup from the market they bring it to the house and first they will break it. First thing they do is they will break the cup and paste as they want. It will be the same cup but totally different. Their rubber stamp will be there. They will have their own say on it. There is nothing similar. Everything is unique. Even in the tea cup they will have their way. So, have your own way in everything, have your understanding in everything, have your clear cut freedom, clear cut understanding, clear cut way of thinking and way of living and way of speaking. Having your own way in thinking, speaking and doing is what is called satya. Satya does not mean speaking only the truth. Satya means living the truth, speaking the truth, thinking the truth. What for you are born, express that. Express the life of yours, otherwise in the time of deathbed you will be talking like a Einstein. I tell you, if you express your life even if you don’t make money, even if you die in a platform you will die with a tremendous satisfaction that you lived your life.

What is Guru's Sight OR Guru's Paarve || Spiritual Discourse || 11 Feb 2004

What is the meaning of Guru Paarvai or Guru’s sight?

It has got 3 types of meanings, you can say three meanings: One is astrologically - the eyes of Guru. The eyes of Guru does lot of good things, lot of good things - for some people marriage happens and for some people marriage does not happen. Both are good. Because for some people marriage happening is good, for some people marriage not happening is good. Not only for him, for her also. So both the way it is good. The other thing in the spiritual science, Guru paarvai means the sight of Guru, means when Guru sees you, when Guru looks at you. One thing - it is always Guru who chooses you. Never think you choose the Guru. Guru who chooses you; when Guru sees you he chooses you. When he chooses you, you will see you are just lifted, you are just taken and everything else is taken care. It just happens. People always think we are choosing the guru. Guru chooses you that is what is the sight of the Guru.

(1:50)

And one more understanding you need to understand. It’s a very subtle thing. Of course, in a deeper layer. At one stage you need to go beyond even the Guru’s form. You need to go even beyond the Guru’s form. At that time the vision of the Guru will guide you. How?

(2:14)

A small incident: One Zen master, he became enlightened by the grace of his guru. Somebody came and asked him, “You became enlightened because of your Guru. But you never follow your Guru.” The disciple said, “What? I always follow my Guru.” The other man asked, “What your guru does you never do. What your guru used to do you never do. You do it in different way and... than your Guru. “ Disciple says, “My Guru never followed anybody. So I follow that idea. I never follow anybody.” Following the idea of not following anybody. So at one stage you need to cross even the Guru. At that time the Guru’s vision, the Guru’s vision, the paarvae of Guru, the way in which Guru looks at the world, the way in which Guru works, the Guru’s vision, will descend on you. When the Guru’s vision descends on you, you cross even the Guru’s, what to say, form and you yourself become Guru.

All the three: whether to get married or to enter into the spiritual life or to become enlightened, the Guru’s sight, the Guru Paarvae is necessary. That is the basic thing in your life.

I welcome you all. The spiritual Navigator Patanjali, founder of eight steps to enlightenment. He's the father of yoga, he's the father of all the spiritual Sciences. The book which he wrote is the unabridged dictionary of all world philosophies. He gives eight steps to enlightenment, eight steps towards meditation, towards spiritual experience.

The first step: Yama Second step: Niyama Third step: Asana

That is what we were seeing. We will understand little more. You don't need to remember the Sanskrit words, but you understand the exact meaning. Because in English, there are so many concepts with no equivalent word. As I was telling you, Satya don't have equivalent word. Satya does not mean truth. Truth is only speaking the facts verbally. Telling the truth, it means something related to the oral or mouth or the speech but Satya does not end there. Satya does not mean only speaking truth. It is living truth and thinking truth. It's more. I was explaining to you yesterday, the living truth, upholding truth. Living your own life, fulfilling your mission, expanding your life is Living Truth.

Talking the truth you know. Talking the truth does not need much explanation. Next thing - thinking the truth. Using your intellect towards search of reality is what is thinking the truth. Using your intelligence, using your mind towards the search of the truth. Most of the time we don't dig. You need to understand this one word digging. Suddenly you see some one of your friend or relative is dead. You go there. For two - three hours or for one or two days you feel the sorrow, sadness. Sometimes you also get the feeling that anyhow after a few days I'm also going to die like this. It's called Smashana Vairagya. At the time of going to the graveyard, at the time of your friend or relative’s demise you get some deep connection or you get some deep decision that you will die, “Anyhow I'm also going to die one day. Let me live truthfully. Let me live morally.” Or you take many, you make many decisions. Many times you think I should live like this, I should live like that. I've seen many people deciding, taking the decision. Anyhow I'm going to die one day let me meditate now itself. Let me do all the meditations now itself. Let me live the spiritual life now itself. But the Vairagya or the will never stands. Once the 13 day ceremony is over, everything is over. Once the thirteen yay is over everything is over. You don't dig. All your sorrow, all your mind, all your depression or any moods, you don't look deep into your moods. Any mood just comes in a vague way and disappears. You don't go deep into it. Many times your mind, your spirit, your intelligence gets awakened by the atmosphere or the situations that you see in the society.

(5:13)

A small story from Buddha's life. First time when Buddha went to see the city, Buddha's father never allowed the Buddha to go out of the palace because he was afraid that he will become a sanyasi. Buddha, when Buddha took birth, the astrologers have predicted either he will become a great enlightened master or he will become a great king. So anyhow, naturally his father wants him to be only a king not to be a sanyasi. So somehow if Buddha comes to know the illusory or the Maya of the world, somehow if Buddha comes to know the suffering part of his, the world he will become sanyasi. So Buddha's father does not want him to come to know the suffering part of the world. So he always kept him in a cheerful mood, in a lively mood inside the palace. First time somehow that wants to go, go around and see the city. When he went around he first saw a old man. He asked the driver, the charioteer, “What has happened to this man?” The charioteer said, “Master”, or King, “Oh King he has become old. Next thing he saw a dead body being carried. “What has happened to him?” The charioteer said, “He has died. He's dead.” Buddha asked, “Will I also die? Charioteer said, “King, you should forgive me, you should excuse me but according to the truth, as per the truth, you will also die.” Immediately, something has happened to Buddha. He started thinking. He started digging deep, the truth. His whole intellect, his whole mind has turned towards the search. His whole mind is so truthful, it started searching the truth or the reality of the death. We also see everyday so many dead bodies. Our mind never digs deep the reality or the truth. We, every child sees continuously, continuously every child sees so many people dying but not all of us think, or not all of us bother. That is why he became Buddha we still are Buddhus. Nothing else.

(8:05)

When you start digging deep, the truth, you start practicing Satya in mental wise, mentally, going behind the truth wherever it leads. Of course, when you follow the truth you will always feel you need to lose something, you need to take the risk, you need to take the life of courage, you need to live in deep insecurity. Truth leads you into insecurity. It always happens. A man who wants a secured life cannot be bold to live the insecurity. Of course, unless you take the life, insecurity, you will not understand the joy because living in insecurity means living in curiosity living in search, living in a deep search. What is this? what is that? You are just living like a child. Child has got tremendous curiosity. Child has got tremendous curiosity. Living in a deep curiosity is what I mean living in truth, thinking the truth continuously.

(9:31)

When I was a ten-year-old boy I've been taken to a Swami, Annamalai Swamigal, an enlightened master. He was preaching, he was telling we are beyond bodies, no pain, no suffering touches us, pain never happens to us. We are atman, we are soul. All these great teachings. Somehow thought. I was excited when I heard no pain affects us because always we feel the pain. He says there is no pain for us. We are b eyond pain. We are beyond miseries and sorrows. As soon as I went back to the house, I took a knife and cut my thigh to see whether there is pain or not. Whether really pain comes or not, still now the mark is there. Of course, there was pain but not only the pain the blood started pouring. How they took me to the doctor, after the first aid, they put all the stitches. It took some few days to get healed. After the healing I went back to the that Swami and asked him, “What is this? You taught something I went and tested it on myself. Then he said, he gave me a small meditation technique to understand what he said. He says what I said is right but you understood it in the other way. You do this one meditation technique then the real understanding with happen to you, will come to you. I tried with that meditation technique. When I was 12 I had my first spiritual experience just because of that technique. He says, “You hurt yourself, your thigh. Of course it has given you pain but there is nothing wrong, nothing much bad because this curiosity, this sense of searching for the truth, the mind which is continuously searching for the truth. Because of this mind you may have one cut but you will understand this will lead you to the greatest possible flowering or the enlightenment. This is exactly the truth. Of course I had one small cut. It is not a big thing. When I started searching I actually risked, I took a risk. I see it. Even though I had some pain, some problem it is not a big thing compared to the result compared to the things which I achieved, compared to the things which is being achieved by that mind, by that courage. Of course most of you never had any cut, at least in search of Truth. You had cut in many ways, cutting the vegetable or the fight or in other ways. At least in search of the truth you never had any cut. But I don't think Life is worth living without the search of Truth. Life is not worth living without the search of Truth. If you don't have a cut. That's what they say beautifully even if you fall few times nothing wrong but never try, never stop that trying to walk. Never stop that habit of trying to walk. Never stop walking. Of course, first few times you will fall. Is there anybody who has started walking without falling? No. But just because you will fall if you stop working is it going to help anyway? No. So even if you make small mistakes, not one or two, even if you make some mistakes, nothing wrong, continue the search, living in truth, searching for truth, will surely lead you only ahead in your life, ahead of your life what you're living now. It will only take you beyond your life.

(14:00)

It will lead you to the Satya. It will lead you to the enlightenment. So the first rule, the first thing you need to understand is Satya. Next - Ahimsa, Non-violence. Ahimsa does not mean you will not enter in terrorist activities. Of course that's one part of it. Ahimsa means you will not torture the people who are around you. Many people come and tell me, “Swamiji, I am a great Ahimsite. I'm a great man of non-violence. I love the whole world.” It is very easy to love the whole world only difficult to love neighbor. To love the whole world is very easy but to love the neighbor is the greatest difficulty because when you say I love the whole world you don't need to do anything. You can continuously say the same thing -” I love the whole world. I love the whole world. I love the whole world.” You don't need to do anything. But when you say “ I love the neighbor” you need to change your life. Most of the time just look your own being. If your boss, if you deal with your boss, even if he gives you trouble even if he disturbs you you show a big smiling face. If it is your subordinate even if he's alright you just see what you'll do - you jump on him. You have one rule for you, one rule for others. Dropping that idea of having one rule for you, one rule for others is what is non-violence. When you do it it's love, when somebody else does it it's a lust. When you do it it is a good thing. When somebody else does the same thing “for name and fame he's doing”. When you do it it's a charity. When somebody else does it, it’s for his name and fame sake he is doing. For the sake of name and fame. When you are mad at somebody when you are angry at somebody you say, “No, no just for him I am doing, Just for the sake of him I'm correcting him.” When somebody else is mad at others you say, “Look, like a animal he is behaving.” Non-violence means dropping the attitude of having one rule for you, one rule for the others. There are many aspects of non-violence. Even looking ugly is non-violence. If you show your depressed face to others it is non-violence because you are spreading your depression. Even looking ugly is non-violence, you make them feel disturbed. So in every part, in every life, in every moment of your life try to spread, try to add ahimsa. Even if you look sorrow, sad, disturbed, it is more or less violent, psychological violence. There are so many ways. I can tell you physical violence is actually much less, it’s not too much. Psychological violence is a great thing which adds poison in our life. Almost I can say poison in our life. There are so many incidences I can quote. People come and ask me, “Swamiji, there are so many terrorist people, so many dictators or so much of terrorism is spreading all over the world. How to stop it?” I tell them, “Bothering about terrorism is secondary. First bother how much you are spreading the violent ideas in your house, the place where you live.”

(18:27)

There is a beautiful Sutra, aphorism which says - “All your Collective positivity becomes Buddha. All your Collective negative thoughts only which becomes a terrorist.” Collective positivity which becomes enlightened beings. Enlightened beings, masters are the great source to planet earth. So it is you who contributes some way directly or indirectly to all the terrorists. Somebody else will come up because collective negativity is there. Unless you destroy the collective negativity no way terrorism is going to stop. It is each and everyone of you it is your responsibility to take care of the collective negativity. So try to destroy the collective negativity you will see the non-violence or Ahimsa happens to you all.

Pranayama is the next word, the next step. Prana means life energy. Don’t think its breath. Again the word Prana does not mean breath. Yama means handling it properly or using it ultimately. Pranayama, you need to understand this word totally. Using the life energy. Pranayama means using the life energy, using the life energy. Breath means something like air going inside your system and coming out of your system. But breath is not Prana, understand. Breath is like a lorry, Prana is like a stuff which goes inside the lorry. Understand one example, inside your company a lorry comes with lot of luggage, luggage is delivered and lorry goes back. Lorry is breath, lorry is breath and the stuff which comes inside is what is Prana. Prana is the subtle portion, a subtle energy which is being carried, which is inside the breath. Pranayama means using the life energy. I’ll give you a very simple technique of using the life energy. Now, as on now you breathe only till Anahata, till the heart centre because you have an idea, breathe means only air. Your lungs wants the air. So you breathe only up to the lungs, up to Anahata, up to heart centre. If you see the Buddha statues in Japan you will see with a big belly.

(2:19)

In Zen there’s a beautiful word - you should breathe till the Muladhara Chakra, till the belly, till lower abdomen. That is why they mention, they show the Buddha with a big belly. Because when they breathe, you will see the Zen people when they breathe, they breathe from the belly, from the lower abdomen, they don’t breathe from the chest. If you breathe only till the level of chest you’ll see, you’ll have a perfect lungs, you’ll have a good breathe, nothing wrong, you will not have the Prana. If you breathe as deeply as possible only then the Prana happens to you. The energy happens, otherwise you will have only the oxygen, oxygen does not mean energy. Please understand Pranayama means using the energy, taking the energy from the air. Now air goes in, oxygen is taken out, air comes out. When you breathe deeply, air will go in, not only the oxygen, the prana also will be taken in, the air will come out. To take the Prana from the air you need to circulate the air at least to the Manipuraka, navel center. At least the navel center should touch the… at least till the naval center you need to breathe. That is why the Ganesha is always shown with a big belly and the long nose. Long nose and the big belly and He is the embodiment of energy and intelligence.

(4:05)

When you have a long breathe, deep breathe you will have intelligence. Whenever you remember, when you go in the car or you read the newspaper, when you sit in front of the TV and watch, whenever you remember you just take deep possible breath, as deeply as possible. Deep breathe you will see your energy, the pran, level of Prana will become more and more, higher and higher, it will become beautiful. It will start expanding. Whenever you remember just take as deeply as possible the deep breathes. You will see your whole being will start living. Now, as on now you supply only oxygen to the body, never the breathe. Because oxygen separation happens in the lungs, but energy separation happens only in the navel center. Only in the naval centre the energy separation happens. Energy can be separated from the air only in the naval center. Only oxygen can be separated in this (chest) region. So all of you be aware only if you take deep breathes the energy can be separated from the Prana. That is why they call Pranayama is the basic need for the spiritual aspirants. You need to have more sharpness, more intelligence, more awareness. There are thousands of Pranayama techniques which is not necessary for all of you. This is a very simple Pranayama technique and very helpful. Whenever you remember immediately start breathing as lengthily as possible, continuously have the long breathe. After sometime it will become habit. After sometime it will become habit. Now you have very shallow breathe, very shallow just like your mind, very shallow. Any moment it can change. This moment you say somebody is friend, next moment you say he’s your enemy, because of him only I’ve been cheated. The very next moment you say, “No, no he has done everything, so much for us Swamiji.

(6:42)

Next step after the Pranayam – Pratyahara. Pranayama, Pratyahara and Dharana, these three are more mental. It works on the mental layer. The Yama, Niyama, Asana works on the body - physical. Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana works on the mental. Dhyan and Samadhi works on the spiritual. So let Me explain the next Pratyahara. Pratyahara means collecting your mind from the outer world. This you need to understand. Collecting your mind from the outer world. Now, as on now how you use your mind. You have a small experiment: when you go back to your house, sit just for 5 minutes and write down whatever thoughts comes to your mind honestly, you’re not going to show to anybody, you’re going to have it only for you. Just write down whatever thought comes to your mind. Whatever you think continuously you just write down. It you write down 5 minutes, just for 5 minutes, then you’ll understand, and then read it. Then you’ll understand if you’ve written 100 thoughts, more than 60, I say minimum, more than 60 will not be directly useful for your life. Either for your wealth or for your health or for your… even for your money-making, leave alone spirituality, it will not be useful even for your money-making. Most of the thoughts will be just vague thoughts. Your mind is almost like a chaos. Anything is happening in any place. Anything can happen in any place. Anybody can tell anything. It is more like a lunatic asylum. If you write down only then you will be able to understand here something is happening, there something is happening, that side suddenly something else is happening. Suddenly you’re thinking about India and the next moment you are here, the third moment you think let me go and watch TV. It is just like a lunatic asylum, what is happening you do not know at all.

(9:19)

Once in a lunatic asylum there was a man who thought himself as a Jawaharlal Nehru. He always used to think he is a Nehru and he used say he is a Nehru and dress just like him and have a rose flower. And move about just like Nehru always saying I am the Prime Minister, I am the Prime Minister of India. Somehow he was brought to the asylum, 6 months he was there. He almost became alright. He is going to be released. Just exactly few days ago, few days before his release by coincidence Jawaharlal Nehru came to visit that asylum. So the doctors thought it will be nice if we introduce this man to the Nehru, the original Nehru. So they took him, he was almost become alright, that man has become almost alright, normal. So he has to be only sent to the house, sent back, sent back to the home. So they took him and introduced him to the Nehru, “Sir, he is the man, his name is so and so. He thought of himself as you. He is crazy of you and he thought himself as Nehru. Now he has become alright, almost normal.” Then that man asked the Nehru, “Who are you?” Nehru said, “I am the Nehru, I am the Prime Minister of India.” and so and so. Then this man said. “Oh, is it so? Don’t worry, be here 6 months. They will make you alright. Just be here for 6 more months they’ll make you alright.” Just like this your mind is nothing but a lunatic asylum. If you write down then you’ll understand how your mind is. Each corner so many things are happening and you do not know what is happening.

(11:30)

There is a beautiful saying in Katopanishad, one of the Upanishad says, it gives an example of chariot, your body is the chariot, your five sense are the 5 horses and your Atman is the owner of the chariot. All the 5 horses, if they are controlled by your mind and properly handled then you’ll reach where you want to reach. If the horses are not controlled, if every horse goes in their own way, in their own direction, where you’ll reach? Where horses want to reach only you’ll reach there. You’ll reach nowhere.

(12:21)

Pratyahara means controlling or collecting, not even controlling, the word controlling has some bad connotation. Immediately we will be frightened. I don’t say control, I say there are so much of mental energy, mental thoughts getting wasted. Collect all those energies and try to put it in a proper use, try to use it. Most of the time when you do some physical work, especially when you do some physical work; if you are a person with mental work you don’t need to waste much of your mental energy. But if you are a person who is working physically, even if you work physically, your mind will be doing its work. Your mind becomes master of continuously doing its work without even your awareness, without even your participation. You will be doing something and your mind will be doing something. Mind becomes master of the art, then you will see much of your mental energy will be getting wasted.

(13:35)

So, whenever you work, whenever you do your things put your whole thing, put your whole mind at present. Try to live inside your body, then you will see Pratyahara will automatically happen. But what we do? We never try to live inside our body. Understand this one thing: you always live outside your body. If you are in the house you think of office. When you go to the office you think of the weekend. When you are in the weekend again think something about the office. When you are in the office again you think when I will go to house. When you are in the house when I’ll go to the theatre - when I will go here - when I will go there. If you’re in the house you can be sure your mind is not in the house. If you’re in the house your mind will be in the office. If you’re in the office your mind will be in the house. You live where you are not. That becomes continuous habit. You start living exactly in your boundary, inside your body the Pratyahara will automatically happen and unnecessarily you will not waste the mental energy.Unnecessary wasting of mental energy only leads to depression. Unnecessarily wasting mental energy only leads to depression.

(15:02)

I tell you, people and ask Me, “Swamiji how to control the anger?” Anger is a very big problem. Anger is a part-time madness. Madness is a full-time anger. That’s all. You see in angry... when you are angry or when you are mad both the time you do not know what you are doing. Both time you do not know what you are doing. When you are angry, when you are in the angry mood, when you are in the mood of anger you do not know what you are doing. Same thing, when you are mad you do not know what you are doing. So anger is nothing but the part-time madness. If you take up the full-time job you are mad. If you play the part-time role, you are angry, you are mad with anger, that’s all, nothing much. People come and ask Me, “How to control anger Swamiji?” I tell them a very strange solution, real solution. I tell them, “Take the photograph when you are angry. And have it in your drawing room. If possible worship it!” Looks very strange. But if you try then you’ll understand the whole anger will disappear. First thing you’ll understand how ugly you look when you are angry. You’ll be reminded continuously how ugly you look when you are angry. The next thing you will understand anger is an energy. Understand this one thing: just like money anger is an energy. If somebody does a job for you which is worthy of $1000, how much you’ll pay? Not surely even $900. If the man is really courageous to fight with you then he may get $990. At the most if you are little compassionate and charitable you may give a $1000 that’s all, but never more than that. But if the same man does a mistake of $1000, poor thing, how much of anger you will shower on him. How much of anger you pour on him? How much of anger? At least Rs 10,000 worth of anger you pour on him. If a kid, if a child cries you shout much more than that child. Your voice will be more louder than the child. Actually, most of the time they get frightened and stop crying. It’s not that they simply stop crying. They get frightened by your voice and they stop crying. Most of the time they get frightened and most of the kids you can see, if you start telling the stories immediately they will sleep, not by the power of the story they are afraid to listen to the stories. Anyhow... when you respect anger as a energy you don’t waste it. But most of the time you don’t have respect for your anger. You don’t understand that as a energy and there is energy.

(18:20)

If you spend too much of money you’ll become bankrupt. Same way, if you spend too much of anger you’ll become energy corrupt. A new word, understand, energy corrupt. That is why after shouting, after pouring out your anger, you feel so tired, you just fall in your sofa and ask for coca-cola or coffee. Actually you feel totally drained, you feel totally drained. A small outburst of anger can suck one day energy. It can suck whole one day energy. So wasting your energy, wasting your thoughts, wasting your mind makes you energy corrupt. Pratyahara means; understand how much you waste your energy. Again and again scan your life and start collecting your energy. It is more than gold. Anger is gold. I always tell the people, “We should create one more Lakshmi, Kopalakshmi. Actually Kopalakshmi, she is the energy you waste it. Because you don’t have respect for it. You have respect for money. That’s why you always keep inside and lock it. But if you don’t have the respect naturally you won’t keep inside and lock. Because you have respect you keep inside and lock, and use it only when it is necessary. On anger you don’t have respect you don’t have respect on your anger. You think, you feel, so you just throw it on any and everybody. Have understanding, have respect for your energy you’ll then you’ll understand what Pratyahara means.

Next, asteya - non-stealing. Asteya means non-stealing. You may ask, “Then are we all stealing?” Are we stealing? You need to understand one thing. Mahavir says beautifully in the Jain sutras: when a man takes birth on this planet Earth, the amount of food which he will eat throughout his life is already sent to the Earth. It will be immediately sent to the Earth by God, by the divine, by the existence. It’s a very beautiful sutra, it’s in Pali. As soon as you land on this planet Earth, the amount of food which you will have will be sent to the planet Earth, will be sent to the existence. For example: 500 people are in the Earth now. The food for the 500 people will be sent to the Earth. If 200 people overeat, what will happen? Other 200 people. If 200 people overeat, what will happen? Other one has to go without food. Obesity is stealing.

Please understand. Obesity is stealing. Eating more than what you want, possessing more than what you want, having more than what you want, being greedy more than you want is what is stealing. Stealing does not mean only taking away without paying. That is kleptomania. Many people have got the habit just for the sake of thrill. Just for the sake of thrill, small scent, small-small things only, not big things, small-small things, the scent in the shops. When they go, they feel thrilled; if they pick up one or two things - small scent or one cent coin or one small book, small-small gift articles. Of course, that is klepto, that is different, but what I mean by the word ‘stealing’, not that illegally acquiring, illegally possessing other things. That is different. Of course, that is also stealing. But in the common life, not only that is the stealing. Understand. Stealing does not mean only possessing others’ properties illegally, others’ things illegally. Stealing means overeating. Even overeating, in a way, you steal others’ food. You want only this much of food, but if you eat too much, then what will happen to others, other people? Stealing others’ food; if you overeat, directly or indirectly, you are stealing others’ food. Or you raise the price of the food indirectly. Am I right? When you overuse the things, you raise the price of the food. Same way, if you use gas too much, you raise the price of the gas directly or indirectly. So naturally, you are stealing. Asteya means stealing, asteya means non-stealing. Stealing means not only possessing others’ property illegally; it is using too much of things, wasting the things, wasting the things. If you waste the water, you are stealing. If you waste energy, you are stealing. Saving the current or saving the water, saving the gas, all these things are asteya. If you save all these things, you really live the life of asteya. If you waste all these things, naturally live the life of stealing. So understand the word, ‘asteya’, and live it. Try to minimize the waste. Try to reduce the wastage. And how much the waste, you do not know. Food, water, energy, how much?

(5:02)

Just have little bit of awareness. I always tell the people, “Wasting means unawareness.” In Zen monasteries, they will peel the vegetables; the vegetables will be peeled. The way in which he peels the vegetable, from that he will be decided if he should be given sanyas or not. From that, he will be decided whether he should be initiated or not. What it means? When a man peels the vegetable with awareness, he will peel exactly how much it is necessary. When you do it without awareness, naturally, along with the skin you will be peeling the vegetable portion also. You will be wasting it. It is not that vegetable will be wasted. It does not mean, it does not show about vegetable; it shows about you. It never shows about the vegetable; it shows about you. People come and always complain Me about others. Whenever A comes and says about B, I never bother about B, I understand about A. Whenever A comes and complains to me about the B, I always understand how A is, not how B is. When you complain also, you waste your words. You waste so many things. You waste so much of energy, so much of things. Not only the current, even your own energy, you just waste. So, non-stealing means not wasting the things also because it needs your awareness. I have seen many people brushing the teeth. They will just open the tap, it will be going-going-going, and they will be brushing, thinking all the whole accounts or what all the things they have to do. And sometimes they will stand and looking at the mirror, water will be going. All these things are, you see it does not count if you waste the, it is not that if you waste the water you will not become enlightened. It does not, it may not count in a big way. But it counts; you are not living that moment. You are missing that moment. It shows your unawareness. It shows how much you are unaware. I always tell the people, “When you waste the money you disrespect the Lakshmi.” When you waste the money you disrespect the Lakshmi. Don’t think, wasting 10 rupee and wasting 10,000 rupee is different things. It is one and the same. The attitude of wasting, when it is there; today, because you have only 10 rupees you will waste 10. When you have the 10,000, you will waste 10,000. That’s all. See, around the world, in every city, lottery is going on. So many people get so many lakhs through lottery, so many crores through lottery, so many millions through lottery. Have you seen a single man who has become rich man by lottery? Very rare. Even if they get, they do not know how to care for it. Somehow, they lose it. When you have the awareness to preserve, only then you can save it.

(8:31)

In Sanatana Dharma, there is a trinity, holy trinity: Creator, Preserver and Destroyer. The Preserver is called Vishnu. Vishnu means intelligence. Only with intelligence, you can preserve it, Creator is Brahma, Preserver is Vishnu, and Destroyer is Shiva. Vishnu means, exactly the Sanskrit word means, Vishnu means intelligence or who permeates everywhere, who knows everything. That is what is meant by the word, ‘Vishnu’. If you have Vishnu, if you have intelligence, only then you can preserve it. Otherwise you can’t. You can’t preserve it. Having intelligence is what is called asteya, non-stealing.

Brahmacharya, again, celibacy is not equivalent term for Brahmacharya. Brahmacharya means something flowering, celibacy means something missing. Brahmacharya is not equivalent word for celibacy. Brahmacharya means something more than celibacy. Ordinary celibacy means you are missing something, is something vacuum. The very word gives the meaning of emptiness, loneliness. But Brahmacharya means, it is totally different. Out of your experience and joy, ecstasy, that’s what they say beautifully, the word means, Brahmacharya means - the man who lives like a God. The man who has achieved the inner orgasm. The man in whose life, the life turned inside, the energy is totally joyful - ecstatic - blissful inside. He is a man who is called Brahmachari. The man whose inner energy is overflowing - bubbling - vibrating. He is the one who is called Brahmachari or living like a God. So work towards it. You cannot make Brahmacharya to happen to you. It can only happen. You cannot do anything to be a Brahmachari. It can only happen.

(1:54)

A small story: A man went to the bar as usual in the night to have his usual drinks. He saw a well-dressed smart travel, salesman standing there. Went near the man, went near the salesman standing there, see him first by his dress and the way he was standing. He also wants to have the same type of dress, same set, our hero moved, went near the, went near the salesman and asked, “What are the shoes you are wearing? It’s so nice, just shining.” The salesman said very casually, “crocodile shoes”. The man did not understand, but he was feeling shy to ask next time, he was feeling shy to question. So, he went to his friend and asked, “ What is Crocodile?” What is meant by the word crocodile? The friend told, “Oh, crocodile. It’s the animal which lives in Brazil. If you go to Brazil in a deep forest you may get a crocodile from rivers. “ <<unclear>> Man decided either this way or that way I am going to have what I want. He sold all his property, travelled to the Brazil, finally he got the help of one travel guide, somehow went inside a jungle and took a boat. He was just rowing in a river, saw the crocodile and started shooting. After a long fight, somehow he killed one crocodile, threw it to the river and shouted, “O God, this crocodile has no shoes!” Just one word misunderstanding. If he would have asked, “What is meant by crocodile, meant by crocodile shoes”, he would have got reply. And one, only one word ‘crocodile shoes’, he was understanding the word totally, he understood in his own way. Finally he has to undergo such big torture and even after undergoing, he said ‘it is not there’. Same way, when you understand the word brahmacharya as a celibacy, you do that same mistake.

(4:52)

Brahmacharya means something happens to you. You are so bubbling, vibrant, every cell, every pore of your body vibrates with energy. You are totally in ecstasy, in that orgasmic mood continuously. They say, in Tantra there is a beautiful saying - you will be vibrating with the energy, you will be just oozing out the bliss. A man whose energy has raised, the man who has become brahmachari, a man who has become enlightened, his each and every hair will vibrate with energy. Only he can be a brahmachari. He can be called as a brahmachari. When you don’t understand the word Brahmacharya, what you do? Just like crocodile shoe, you ask “what is Brahmacharya?” Not to the master, to some of your own friends. If you ask master ‘what is crocodile shoe’, you will get the direct reply. You see, just like when you get attracted to the salesman, the more got attracted to the salesman, he went and he saw how he is, then he asked, “What shoe you are wearing?” The salesman told, “Crocodile shoes”. He has not understood, he would have asked one more word. Same way people get attracted to Me seeing My life and the joy and ecstasy. They ask, they ask them. At least they don’t ask Me actually directly. They ask others, “Why this Swami is so joyful” People tell, “He is a sanyasi. That’s why He is joyful.” So they understand in their own way. They understand exactly ina way “crocodile shoe”. They start searching for the crocodile. What they do immediately? They start suppressing. I have seen many guys, many people, they start suppressing their mind and finally they get the crocodile. And when they turn the crocodile, they say, “Oh, there is no shoes on this crocodile.” The same way when we also suppress the desires, if we start repressing the desires you will create only depression never brahmacharya.

(7:17)

Brahmacharya means travelling towards enlightenment. Brahmacharya means living like a God. If you start living like a God, whether you are married or unmarried it does not matter, you will become brahmachari. You are Brahmachari. If you live like a God you are brahmachari. Otherwise wherever you are, you are ordinary. It’s more from your being. It’s more from your personality. It’s more from energy. So Brahmacharya means start living like a God. Start living with the joy, start living with the bliss, start entering into the place, entering into the space of meditation. That’s the only way for Brahmacharya. That’s the right address where you will get the crocodile shoes. Meditation is the right address where you will get the crocodile shoes. Otherwise you will only get the crocodile, not the shoes, never the shoes. If you go for searching the celibacy you will only get the crocodile not the shoes. If you go for searching the meditation you will get the crocodile shoes.

Asana means comfortable way of keeping your body. It does not mean only at the time of meditation you should be comfortable. You should be comfortable throughout your day and night. Your body should be handled with more sensitivity. Your body should be handled with more life. Asana means, according to Patanjali, which is sukha and sthira, which is comfortable and solid.

I tell you, asana means keeping your body comfortably and in a relaxed way not only at the time of meditation, throughout the day and night. I will give one or two examples, how you torture your body. Having some junk food even if your stomach says, “No no no… I don’t want to eat this food. Last time I ate this food, body is upset.” You know very well, you took some junk food, your body was upset. You had a stomach trouble. But again, when you go for party you pick up only that same food. Having junk food, night two o’clock, till night two o’clock watching some movie in the TV. Your eyes will beg you, “Please give me little rest.” It’ll just close, and it’ll feel as if it wants to go to sleep immediately. Your eyes will beg you, your body will almost beg you, but you will not let the body to have its way. What you will do: “No no no very good, nice, sports, games.” Watching the sports or games. Playing the sports or the games is perfectly alright, but watching it simply foolishness, simply! I tell you, really! It’s cerebral layer I call it, satisfying yourself in a second hand way. In all the way, second hand, the cerebral layer is very dangerous. Second hand smoking, just like a second hand smoking only! Sitting and watching sports and the games is nothing but second hand smoking. One thing. Same way, seeing the violence and satisfying yourself. Actually satisfying your violence. It is just, which you can’t do directly, by seeing it, you satisfy yourself - cerebral layer.

(3:00)

The same thing, sports and games. When you don’t want to do, you just satisfy yourself by seeing it. I tell you, if you play, if you jump, if you run around, you will really, you will be doing the asana, the asana. If you don’t do it, if you just see the things and satisfy yourself, it is anti-asana. Asana means keeping yourself, keeping your body in a comfortable and a beautiful relaxed way throughout your day and throughout your night. In many times, you torture your body for the sake of your joy and your comforts. Satisfying yourself too much by torturing the body. Same thing, for the sake of your sensory pleasures, how much you torture your body? The sound, loud musics. When you go back to your house, your eyes will be sleeping, actually vibrating, but again when you go to the party you use only the same types of musics. For the sake of your sensory pleasures, you destroy the body. You kill your eyes, you kill your tongue, you kill your nose, you kill your ears, you kill your nose also by using the strong perfumes, kill your nose; so many ways you kill your body for the sake of your sensory pleasures. So understand, keeping your body and using it as beautifully as possible, as sensitively as possible, loving your body means asanam. Asanam means loving your body. But most of the time, you don’t love your body. You exploit your body, that is what happens. You just exploit and then you blame your body: “Because of my physical pleasures only I lost all my life.” You blame your body. Never blame your body. Your body has got its own intelligence. Blame your mind. That is what needs to be turned. That is what needs to be trained. Keeping your body as alive or as sensitive as possible is what I mean by the word ‘asana’.

It is not that technique is 15 minutes; you are going to practice it throughout the day; I am just going to show you how to do it. So it’s just a simple technique. I’ll show you how to do it. It’s a very simple technique. In the, throughout the day you can continue to practice. First thing: we’ll take few minutes to balance your body, to understand the Asanam. Asana means you should not have any pain or uneasiness in the body. How to do that? After sitting in a comfortable position from the toe to body, just remember your whole body and feel whether it is comfortable or not, whether it is relaxed or not. if you feel your knee is not relaxed, just tense it and relax. You will see that it will fall in relaxation. You should just check your whole body for 2-3 minutes and feel whether it’s comfortable or not. That's the first step. Please listen, then you can do it. The next step: start very slow steady deep breathing - Pranayama. Third step: your inner chattering, from where your inner chattering or thinking starts just be there. Just watch from where your thoughts come, any thought may come, don’t suppress it. Whether it is good or bad don’t label it. Any thought may come just watch it. These are the 3 steps Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara.

(2:09)

First we shall sit straight. Close your eyes. Close your eyes, sit straight. Meditation Process begins... Om Nithyananda Paramashivoham

See from the toe, first check the legs if you are comfortable. Come up... whether your feet are comfortable or not. Just give instruction to your feet - please be relaxed. Your body will simply obey you. Just tell your body, tell your feet please be relaxed. Tell your ankles please be relaxed tell your knees please be relaxed.

Tell your thighs to be relaxed. Tell your hips to be relaxed. Guide your stomach to be relaxed.

Tell your chest to be relaxed. Tell your neck to be relaxed. Tell your face to be relaxed. Tell your body totally to be relaxed and comfortable. Start observing your breath. Sart as deeply as possible breathing. Start breathing as deeply as possible to touch your navel.

Start breathing as deeply as possible... as deeply as possible.

Start watching your thoughts. From where your thoughts raise... just see the root from where your thoughts raise.

Watch near your navel center, that is the place where thoughts raise. Watch as deeply as possible.

Watch as deeply as possible.

(14:36)

Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi. Relax, you can open your eyes. Do this throughout the day that’s enough. Whenever you remember, start practicing it. Don’t create guilt ‘Oh, I have forgotten’. Then again that’ll become one more thought. Whenever you remember, just watch your thoughts, what is happening. So let you have this meditation and let this understanding work miracles inside you. Let you enter, and be, and become Nithyananda. Thank you.

Difference Between Vipasana and Upasana || Spiritual Discourse || 11 February 2004

Video - Difference Between Vipasana and Upasana || Spiritual Discourse || 11 February 2004

Transcript

(0:16)

Q: Swamiji, what is the difference between Vipasana(sitting in silence) and Upasana (chanting of mantras)?

(00:26)

Swamiji: There are two things. Vipasana and Upasana. Upasana means chanting the mantra. Vipasana means paying attention to the breath. When you chant the mantra, naturally all your inner chattering gets slowly, slowly reduced, and your mind is focused on one mantra. Finally you have to come out of that word also to reach the wordlessness or the Bliss. Wordlessness is Bliss.

(00:57)

With Upasana, with mantra, you concentrate all the power in one place, one thought, then you try to escape from that thought also. That is the one step. In Vipasana, you directly slip into that Bliss, thoughtlessness. When you observe the breath, when you put your concentration on the breath, directly you will see, you reach the place where there is no thoughts. That is the difference. Ofcourse, these are such subtle techniques only by practice you will be able to understand. Looks very simple. The technique when you put the thing into practice, then you will be able to understand.

(01:40)

With mantra, your whole mind will be concentrated on one word. Instead of one thousand word, one word. Then from that one word also you will escape. You will enter into wordlessness. With breath watch, with Vipasana, from the very beginning, you will see, you are slowly, slowly entering into the wordless state or the wordless Bliss. The inner chattering becomes lesser and lesser. The traffic becomes lesser and lesser. The awareness, the moments of awareness becomes more and more, and even without inner chattering you will be able to live joyfully, happily. You will run your regular life, a normal life but without worry and the inner chattering. You will be there as it is, just bubbling, energetic.

(02:24)

Vipasana is a direct technique, because I can say, Upasana has made many people enlightened no doubt but the Vipasana has made most people enlightened. In the mantra, your effort is necessary continuously. With Vipasana, after some time, it becomes a total energy phenomena. Instead of you doing it, that will start doing you. To catch the fire, it is very easy. To catch the glimpse of the awareness, to get the blueprint of Enlightenment, blueprint of Enlightenment only I call it as a first experience, Satori. To get the blueprint of Enlightenment, it will be easy through Vipasana than through Upasana.

SWAMIJI: The one simple thing, whenever you chant that mantra, you will feel a easy, relaxed, smoothness. See, your breath has got a capacity to continue till your words end. You need to understand two things. In your inner chattering, when you talk to yourself, in some place you will see, after two-three words also, your breath will be continuing. At one some point, within two-three words, your inner chattering will be broken, you will have breath and then you start talking.

(1:03)

You understand, it is a very deep phenomena, subtle phenomena. You need to understand. See, whenever you are talking with yourself, at some time, you will see, every one word, every one thought your body will be taking the breath. Sometime, even continuously for six-seven words, your body will not be taking the breath.

(1:28)

Your breath and your inner chattering has got a close connection. Sit silently and try to chant that mantra. Till full mantra, if your body does not take the breath, does not feel uncomfortable, if your body is allowing you to continuously chant the mantra, then mantra will work for you.

(1:50)

For some people, if they take ‘Namo Narayana’, by the time they come ‘nara,’ the breath will break. And then, they have to stop and then say, ‘enaye’. For some people, ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, in that Namah Shivaya, va itself, the breath will break. So, this is the one method to find out to whether the mantra is going to suit for you or not. Only these two things. If you chant consciously, any mantra will help you. If you chant unconsciously, no mantra is going to help you. Even if your Guru is powerful Guru, highly powerful Guru, Enlightened, no problem; If YOU don’t practice it, nothing can happen. Only you have to do it consciously.

Bliss means awareness. You will see every moment becomes more aware. You will start seeing everything becomes more conscious, more full of awareness. Then whole thing will naturally change. Whenever you do anything with awareness and consciousness it changes by itself. You don’t have to do anything, that will change by itself. With conscience you have to fight and change your life. With consciousness your life will simply change. And the third thing when you’re joyful, when your life is changing you will see automatically the whole world changes around you, that’s all, but it is so simple we feel this Swami doesn’t know much. That’s the problem.

(1:01)

Participant: Isn’t that depth of enlightenment? Increase in that state of awareness? HDH: Yes, this is simply enlightenment. You practice this stage, this state; you are practicing enlightenment that’s all. Don’t bother about enlightenment. You cannot reach it. Only it has to reach you. When you practice, you will create a space where the enlightenment can happen. Enlightenment is like a flower; you cannot make it open. You cannot make it flower. You create a space, you put a seed, put little water and manure and wait and you will see just it flowers. But you need little bit of patience to wait. If you don’t wait, if you every moment look whether it is flowered or not, whether it is riped or not...

A small story: Three monkeys, they lived in a forest, they got one mango. You know if one monkey gets one mango itself what will happen to that mango. Three monkeys together they got one mango and all the three worked for that mango. So equal share has to go. How to share? They went to a enlightened master for a judgement, who was living in the forest. The master said, “You see, this one small mango surely all three of you can’t share, do one thing. Plant this mango and pour water every day and little manure and pour little water and put little manure. In few, after a few months you’ll have a plant. After some time you will have so many mangoes fruits. All the three of you can enjoy mango fruits throughout your life.” All the three decided - yes, perfectly alright. We’ll do the same thing. They planted, one monkey took the responsibility of putting the water. The other one of putting the manure. The third one - security. All the three religiously continued their practice. But even after 6 months the seed has not sprouted. All three went to the master to complain, “What is this? At least we would have eaten that one mango. Now that is also lost. What have you done?” To complain… Master called all the three monkeys and asked, “What happened?” The first monkey replied, “See every day morning religiously I used to pour water, I don’t even go for my morning walk but I pour water. I do not know what has happened.” Next came and told, “Even if I don’t go to gym I put the manure. You do not know how religiously I did. I do not know what has happened.” Third came and told, “24 hours I used to stand there to take care of the mango. For last 6 months I missed all my datings. Just I was standing there, standing there, standing there taking care of the mango and not only that every day at least once in a day I just dig it out and see whether it has sprouted or not.” If you just dig out every day and see whether it has sprouted or not, you’ll be doing the same mistake of the third monkey.

(4:34)

So put the seed, put little manure, allow the flower to happen. Put all these understandings, putting this understanding is a seed, doing little meditation is the water, the guru’s grace is the manure, your patience – waiting the little bit of patience and your waiting will happen, will allow, your waiting will simply allow the flower of enlightenment to happen.

Participant: Swami, who chooses the disciple? So how will the disciple know that the disciple is chosen by this Guru plus what will start happening to that disciple? HDH: Simply you will fall for him. Not that following in love, raising in love. Simply your heart, you see, people come and ask Me - Swamiji, if I accept you as a guru should I remember you? Fool, when you can’t forget Me, only then I am your guru. If you have to remember Me I am not your guru. If you say I am not able to forget you Swamiji do something, then you be very clear I’m your guru. Simply you’ll see your heart will be taken away. All your logic, all your head; you will try your best to forget ho! I have to do this, I have to do that, what is this the whole day I am thinking of him! You will see that will start happening. Then you can be sure you are chosen and... you have chosen and you are chosen, that’s all. Participant: What is paramahams, what is sanyasi? What is sadguru? HDH: You see Sanyasi is the man who is travelling towards the path and Paramahamsa is the man who has reached the path. That’s all. Who reached the enlightenment. Participant: When you said ‘be aware’, is it the same thing ‘Be witness’?

(6:34)

HDH: Aah, witness, sakshi, awareness, watching the breath, meditate, everything is one and the same, be blissful, all these things are one and the same. Same phenomena, different words. (6:49) Participant: So Swami, Guru has chosen a person, the person can go and meet other guru... HDH: Perfectly alright, perfectly alright, that’s what Ramakrishna says beautifully, “In a family there are 10 people, wife serves everybody, serves the mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law or the husband every… she serves the kids, she serves everybody but she shares her bed only with the husband. Just like that you may have 1000s of relationships, but the beloved is totally different.” The same way you will know in your own heart your Satguru. Never allow somebody else to guide you [as to] who is your guru. Your heart, allow your heart to guide you. That will guide you rightly and properly. No other thing can guide you. Only your heart can guide you. Allow your heart to guide you. And moreover, so many masters will be there, it is not that… there will be so many enlightened people, it is not that all enlightened people can help all the disciples. There are seven kinds of minds and seven kinds of enlightened masters. This exact, that kind of master can help that kind of minds easily. So it’s always that kind of mind get touched by that kind of master. So many times, right masters, they guide the disciples even to other gurus. It happens. Sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly, it happens. So only one scale - your heart. Simply you’ll see I am not able to forget him. That is the state you will see that your guru has chosen you or you have chosen the guru.

(8:29)

People many times ask Me, “Swamiji, if I accept you as my guru, should I remember you continuously?” Then be very clear, I always tell them, never accept Me as a guru. You will see you’re not able to forget. If that happens, then it’s not even under your control, then it’ll happen.

(8:54)

Participant: Swami, can you explain the approach of Shaivism and also if it happens to be part of yoga sutra or not... HDH: Shaivism is vegetarianism? Participant: No, no.. part of Shaivism... HDH: Shaivism… Shaivism is a great subject which takes 2 days and Yoga Sutra takes more than 3 days. How can I connect both? In Yoga philosophy, about God much is not spoken. Only in one place, Ishvara Pranidhanani, only in one place, only one place in the Niyama, Yoga, Patanjali speaks on the God. Shaivism is totally based on Shiva. Shaivism has also got techniques from Yoga. Yoga is also having some portion of Shaivism. But I tell you, Yoga is the base on which Shaivism is built. On the base of Yoga only all the religions are built. As I told you Yoga is the book of books, religion of religions, philosophy of philosophies. It’s the unabridged dictionary of world philosophies. Ok.
